Has anyone any news about the reported 1200 adventure, all i've heard is a whisper that it is to be released in september ??:rolleyes:
 
Heard a whisper that its likely to be the Old Adventure chassis with the new engine, now that i would like
 
I was recently in ShangHai for the MotoGP and whilst there had the chance to have dinner with BMW's area manager for Asia... He's obviously German, a nice guy and as one of BMW's elite managers, very well informed when it comes to things like release dates etc... What he had to say regarding the 1200ADV as well as the HP2 was very interesting...

The 1200 HP2 is apparently the first in a planned series of HP series BMW bikes... Bascially what BMW are trying to do is create an M-Series for their bike range... expensive, exclusive and you guessed it High Performance... It seems we can look forward to other models getting the HP treatment in the future... Interestingly he mentioned the BMW don't really want to sell the HP2, and other future HP series bikes, at least not in large quantities anyway... they want it to be expensive, desirable and exclusive... to this end dealers are not allowed to have more than 1 HP version of any given model (only 1 right now) in stock at any given time and only select dealers are allowed to apply to sell HP series bikes... strange... but I guess it makes sense if you look at BMW's M series cars and the way they are marketed...

Secondly the R1200GS Adventure will be released in early 2006... Obviously Mr.BMW was reluctant to part with too many details, but he says he's received pictures of the 12ADV from BMW and he says he personally likes it a lot (big surprise)... It will have a similar lattice type frame to the 1200HP2 running through/into the body panels, a reworked more robust swing arm, a bloody huge +/-35 liter tank that does away with the clip on side panels of the 1200GS, a reworked engine of course, a re-worked rear rack/handle and interestingly the hard luggage will be aluminium and made my Touratech... Apparently BMW have realised that Touratech make shed loads of money doing aftermarket parts for BMW and it makes sense to get them to do OEM luggage for a BMW bike rather than compete with them...

Anyway, that's mostly the gist of what we discussed and since it was pretty much straight from the horses mouth I'd be surprised if it's too far from the truth...

As I understand from what I have been told is correct.

England is alot like NZ with short rides to most location's. I beleave the HP2 is the bike for adventures and may be an RT or a 1200gs for all other riding. The Adventure is a heavy bike for adventure riding.
I had an Adventure for 2 years and it was fun, but too bloody heavy. The HP2 is only 170kgs dry and has some great low gearing.

Those gear ratios don't make sense ... the HP2 can't be geared higher than the standard bike? The final drive is 1 : 2.82 also, but I assume that was just a typo.

It can not be higher geared than a standard 1200gs

OK I'm still not understanding something.

Same primary ratio (1 : 1.823), same final drive ratio (1 : 2.82)

But the gearbox ratios are about half that of the standard bike ... which seems to indicate the HP2 is much higher geared. Which doesn't make sense.

What am I missing?
 
Weird, those ratios seem ridiculously tall for an off road bike, regardless of its high performance engine when compared to the GS1200 ratios. I guess you aren't the only one missing something Mouse. Anyone else got any ideas ??

This is what I got back from BMW

The ratios are the same in both boxes.

There is a primary input ratio of 1.823 which is then multiplied by the individual gear ratio,

so 1.823(primary ratio) X 2.277(gear ratio) = 4.15 (overall ratio) and so on. Then you take into account the diff ratio also, if you want.
 
Ahh! The figures for the 1200 are quoted including the inital step down between engine and gearbox. The figures for the Adventure are quoted seperately. All makes sense now :)

My comment there would be - they should offer a low first gear option. Maybe I'm just a newb, but I think the 1200's first is too high for just carefully trickling the bike over difficult terrain.

What BMW have said the HP is so much lighter and slightly more power so should be better.
