Chaps,advice needed.
A friend had a small mishap on holiday, described as turned the bike into a ditch at about 5mph, bike didnt come out of the ditch, but popped a fork leg.
His insurance company is talking of writing the bike off, as it is in Annecy France. I know the bike, its a 2009, but no options on it. My friend cant be bothered to go and fetch, and is willing to attempt to negotiate it into his settlement if possible. For the purposes of pricing, I will have to assume without seeing it that I am buying a heap of parts,---bike done about 12000 miles. It will cost about 1200 to fetch it myself--could be done cheaper perhaps by courier,------ so;

a) What should I bid for bits

b) In view of desciption of damage, is it likely to be able to be repaired, anyone had a bike with one leg ok, the other popped?

I am surprised they are not prepared to simply repair it - unless there is a lot more to the damage than stated. BMW put back together a bike the old man crashed slowing down from 120mph - they even changed the forks, frame and a lot of body work - didn't write that off!

They may do yet,just seen photos, damage minaimal, but today they said they are considering write off, but youre right, and thats why I think I have to assume that when I get back (If I get it) that I am selling bits--if its repairable its a bonus.

A friend of mine hit a van last year on his 2010 GSA, main damage was front forks, buy back price from insurance company was £3200, bike is now cat D back on the road.

What does “popped a fork leg” mean? I’d want to see some very good pictures before making a decision. I’ve completed 2 x GS rebuilds and TBH there isn’t really a great deal that can’t be dealt with via cheap Ebay or Motorworks parts (or the other 2). If the damage is heavy front end I’d be looking very closely at the telelever mounting points in the engine block – any damage here may require a new block and a complete rebuild which you really don’t want to get into.

Thanks for the advce so far, was going to offer 3000 but as its in France might get it cheaper?
Heres a few photos,, the damage the forks went side ways as the bike was on its side as the front wheel hit the opposite side of the ditch.

Any thoughts

Doesn't look too bad - from what you can see - only thing I'd be wanting to really check out is the frame, from front to back and where the joints meet the suspension etc. Does the engine run fine and was it fully protected by the bars?

How much are new forks? Provided all seems ok to simply replace bits and bobs - it is a simple matter of pricing up all the parts with new, used or aftermarket upgrades - could be a nice little project.

If you do go for it, make sure you take detailed pics of everything for when you come to sell it - as in lots of cases these days a Cat D bike isn't too badly damage before a pay out (especially with the price of new plastics etc.) and buyers often assume the worst once it is all looking shiny again.

I am amazed at the damage to the forks given 5-7mph hit. Rest of damage is spotlight 2 sets ao grindings to crash bars --slightly scraped plastics to bottom of box and a scraped engine guard.

Superficial scratches wouldn't bother me at all - means you can use the bike as intended without worry too!

The forks look like a fair bit of damage for a low speed tumble - but it doesn't take too much if the force is in the right place to do a lot of damage - given the impact on the forks, I'd be interested in a closer look at the suspension joint/linkage and whether or not the frame/back of the frame need jigged - but from the pics it doesn't look as bad as a few I've seen (apart from those fork legs!).

Just had a conversation with the service manager at my local BM garage. He rekons include for head stock---an extra £800 quid fitted--gasp!

Presumably the £800 is a simply replacement - rather than also sorting out anything bent too!

I recon you'd get it looking like new for under £11k

I would be using it,and selling the F800 I have at the moment. This would finance next years bike trip. By the time I settle up the insurance/current owner and repair it, its market value is not that much more than the cost, given its a cat D and on the log book. It would mean however that I would be riding a GSA at a lower cost. Havent heard anything today,--will have to chase it.
