My 1150 is due for a new battery. Is there anything wrong with fitting a smaller type like the 1200 battery to save some weight?

I dont run any extras and have non abs/servo brakes.

There shouldn`t be a problem, but you`ll need to compare the Amp/Hour rating and 'cold start' capacity of both batteries ..if the 1200 one is lower, you`re eventually going to have starting problems......

Also, I`d advise you to check on the charging needs of the 1200 battery in case there`s a chance of frying it ....

Can`t help adding that swapping batteries to try and save weight on a GS is comparable to Ogri`s quote about Malcolm drilling holes in his bike`s components....'Saves about as much weight as having a piss.....'

Pointless,IMHO.

Well you may save a few grams, and the bike won't start in winter. Personally I'd always go for the biggest battery in any vehicle - as if it doesn't start, its not really a vehicle.

Check out the 1200GS starting problems threads.

Have you considered a Hawker Odyssey for Motorwork Page 84 of their downloadable catalogue. Lightweight and dry cell technology. Repalce my 3 year old battery with one of these.

Where did you buy from and how much?
Direct from Motorworks. Talk to them and they will make sure you get the right size for your bike. Around £86 but as always rounded down for accountants (wife)
<www.motorworks.co.uk> or tel 0845 458 0077 I am not connected with the company just got first class service and advice from them.

Hawker are not gel cell batteries. They are an absorbed electrolyte type battery meaning that there is no free acid inside the battery; all of the acid is kept absorbed in the glass mat separators. These separators serve to keep the positive and negative plates apart. The key difference between the gel cell and the absorbed glass mat (AGM) cell lies in the fact that in the AGM cell all of the electrolyte is in the separator, whereas in the gel cell the acid is within the cells in a gel form. In fact, if the Hawker battery were to split open, there would be no acid spillage

See Les Wassell`s post around here somewhere ( or in Airheads ) about buying a Hawker Odyssey from Cheshire Batteries....they`re loads cheaper than Motorworks... :thumb
