In the interests of being scientific,
how many is "again" and what are the issues?

M

3 times recovered so far :(
1 time in for fork seals needing replaced

twice for EWS failure (once in Italy :spitfire )
And now this issue with no warning on the LCD (bike turns over but not start)

It is the best bike i've had regarding riding, but i'm not confident it'll fire up everytime i turn her over :o

Have BMW done away with thier R&D department :nenau

Errrr we do - read the relevant sections :thumb
Errrr, I do read them, but you have to admit there seems to be far more threads regarding 1200 problems than problems with other bikes. I accept that they may be teething problems - but then again, they may not be.

I hope you don't have to go through the gearbox/ clutch/finaldrive woes as well.

Electrickery is the devils work.

Why bother with R&D when you've got a strong brand following that you can use as product developers :nenau :spitfire :nenau

Just got a call from the dealer and it was some part of the fuel pump that gave up, there going to charge the battery overnight. Only thing is i'm going to have to hand back the 5 series motor

No I dont because there are not far more about 1200 problems.

There are just as many regarding 11**'s and if you talk to owners when the 1150 came out for example there were just as many problems and just as much moaning about them. These problems continue with 'known issues' with the various models.

MBW seem to have sorted the major initial issues and from my experience the complex machine that the 1200 is has no greater record of problems than similar.

And... correct me if I am wrong... but more 1200's have been sold
(That is what I was told at the dealers)
:D

Before I bought mine I scoured this forum and read of all the woes and troubles yet it didn't stop me (I was shocked though, I admit  ). I had decided the 1200 was the best bike for my particular usage and the test rides were favourable, in the performance and handling areas, even though one I rode seemed to be a hard starter. It seemed to be a little plasticy in the build for the money but the only metal on the current fleet of Jap bikes would be in the frame anyway yet we don't consider them placticy. Sure, reading this forum, there seems to be a lot of problems with the 1200 but, at least, I know about them and what to look for. I'll change my FD oil on the first service, watch the handguards on the brake lever if dropped, make sure the battery is well charged before a long ride, run it in properly so it doesn't chew oil, check the fuel pump housing for moisture now and again, and just ride it til it stops. While I am doing that I won't be posting how it hasn't stopped and let me down until it does. Then you will all know and the 850/1000/1100/1150 crew can all shake their heads and tsk, tsk about the 1200's :nono .

Me? I won't care as when I'm riding it I'm smiling because overall it's one damn fine motorcycle. :thumb

I'm waiting for the first 1200 to get to 40,000 miles without the need for a new gearbox/transmission/drive etc. I'm yet to find one.

"I had a "basic" 1200 for 2 years and 41,500 miles - it was superb." from the GS v GSA thread. Not conclusive but a probable.

*ahem*

paralever airheads: shafts, gearbox output bearings, return springs, seperating valves. none of that ever addressed by bmw.

1100: well documented gearbox bearing failures, head gaskets. both isues sorted by bmw however.

1150: gearbox failures, rear crank seal failures, gearbox input seal failures, FD bearings & seals, servo failures, ABS pumps. action by by bmw: absolutely FA.

paragons of reliability? pre monolevers & monos + 1100s (maybe) aside, i don't think so.
