1200 GS buffeting whats the answer?

I'm a dwarf and have a GSA with a Kaheedo low seat fitted and being sat behind the screen on my bike is like being sat in the drivers seat of my Audi :D

Buffeting on the GS

Thanks for all the constructive comments.

Sounds like 3 options.

1. Givi 330 AF

2. BMW adventure screen

3. GSA or RT

Thanks

Another option is to fit tobinators, adjust the screen to minimise buffeting (but thus increase wind noise) and buy a Schuberth C3 helmet to minimise the noise (plus some good ear plugs) :thumb2

Or try sitting back a bit.

I mentioned bar risers. I use Rox risers which allow rearward adjustment too, having thought about this I suspect sitting more upright, meaning my head is further back, might mean I'm out of the turbulent bit.

Or you could drop the bars to get behind the screen......

Riding like the bottom picture works very well, no noise or buffeting :thumb
As I mentioned before, having my seat on the low option eliminates virtually all buffeting and wind noise, which actually makes it pretty eerie :eek

I'm 6ft tall with the standard seat on lower setting.

GS08
AF330 with top of adjustable screen set at bottom of visor
Nippy's winglets
Arai Quantum helmet

Virtually no buffeting and little wind noise around the head. Could cruise all day at 80 with no ear plugs, no problem :clap

At sustained 100+ mph ear plugs are required not from wind noise around the helmet but engine/tyre and body work wind noise. Short 5 mile blasts are not a problem though.

Buffeting is experienced when following other traffic in their dirty air or with a substantial side wind but I suppose there's no way round that.

GSA SCREEN

Fitted GSA screen to my GS world of difference.
Now quieter, very little turbulance.
Have low seat fitted.
now worried I will be too hot in the summer(you cant win).

All joking aside Im thinking either

Givi 330 AF with wing lets

or

Adventure set up

It seems more peeps like 330 set up but looks not as good as GSA set up.
Also some what cheaper which is nice.

Im 6 3 and ride with seat in low setting its a standard gs seat.

Like I said before I did have a 12 GSA and it was ok with extra TT lip added.

So decision time.

330 or GSA set up.

Cheers

adjust the screen to minimise buffeting (but thus increase wind noise)

Are the two factors directly linked and therefore by reducing one, you just increase the other?

Must admit I get relatively little wind noise (compared to previous bikes) but more buffeting.

No ( zilch/nada) buffeting wearing a Simpson super Bandit, buffeting like a beaoch with a Caberg Justissimo... Go figure :nenau

I'm 5 11 with the seat set to low on a 2010 GSA. I found that I was getting buffeted on the motorway even with the screen set to the most upright position. On the motorway I would end up leaning forward and hunching down a bit. I bought the clip on spoiler from Touratech and this has made a real difference for me. I can now sit up straight with the visor open on a BMW Enduro helmet and the wind just goes over the top.

However if you are following traffic at speed I think it is impossible to avoid buffeting because of the turbulence created by the vehicles ahead.

I'm 6' 1" and have a C3 and the noise is markedly louder than my old Blackbird. Now I know we may not be comparing apples with apples but I did discover an interesting thing today riding home. If I put my glove up to the chin vent the secondary and probably louder noise goes away leaving me with just buffeting which I hope to cure with some Tobinators. So it would seem, for me at least, the C3 is the cause of the more unpleasant noise and the screen, on its tallest setting, is the cause of the buffeting. I'm goingto try taping over the vent to see if that cures it.

I use the Wunderlich ergo screen for me. No bufferting and quiet in a shoei multitec flip face. 6' tall and ride with a airhawk on std GS

I believe they are linked, and is due to the airflow over the helmet :thumb2

Not necessarily. Of course, I suppose you have tried different settings for the OEM screen? I don't know your height, but for me, at 5'7", I"ve found that the uppermost position of the screen is not necessarily the best to prevent buffeting on my GS, with a low seat. Even the lowest position gives me a relatively quiet ride. Halfway is best. And I also have the GSA winglets.

Most of you don't mention the speed.
I am 6', 2004 GS, seat on high.
BMW Sys 5 Helmet.
I get turbulence above 120kph in calm air and it dissappears if I duck or move my head forward behind the screen.
On the freeway in moderate traffic the turbulence is a hassle over 100 kph.

I have ridden a GSA at speeds up to 220 kph and turbulence was not an issue - just fuel consumption ha ha.

I lean towards the GSA screen + winglets because it 'looks' BMW - the AF330 and many others just don't look the part, whatever their functionality. But I am nervous that the GSA Screen is part of the GSA shape and am worried that if I spend a lot on the GSA ste-up it does not transfer well to the GS. I have noted the satisfaction of guys who have done this, though.
Thanks, Peter
