If people have bought the GS because it's a capable on-off road dual bike..............then IMHO they're mad.

woof............

I'm reasonably capable off-road (though probably not in your league Bob.........well in your younger days and before your accident) and I wouldn't dream of taking a 1100/1150/1200GS offroad on anything more than a gravel fire - break.

Bogs/Rivers/Rocky trails.............forget it - no fun whatsoever on a 250kg bike for me.

For me it's more enjoyable to load up the Yam Majesty Twinshock or my new HRC Montesa 315R trials bike up in the van and head for a Trial or a spot of practicing for a couple of hours on a really capable bike............
than an overweight and poorly suspended (off-road) mammoth GS and struggle wallowing around in the mud.........no bloody thanks

If people have bought the GS because it's a capable on-off road dual bike..............then IMHO they're mad.

The GS is a superbly capable road bike with excellent and enjoyable touring capabilities..............on the black top.

But for me....... anything more dirty and it's a bloody waste of time!!!!

Don't listen to this man. He claims to have a GS but this is the bloke who led the "Hawes" off-road ride on an XR Honda! All us GSers had a whale of a time....slipping & sliding, wheel spinning & crashing. Great fun. Johhnyboxer just rode round, didn't even break into a sweat.

Johhny, IT'S TOO EASY ON A PROPER DIRT BIKE!

Ah Howard...................

Seem to remember you were on the Airhead GS and my point in this thread refers to the Oilhead 1100/1150/1200GS being too lardy off-road and way too expensive to drop off-road (ask Paul Young...........was it at Llangollen in 2001/2002)

Now I would take an Airhead or a 650 off road...........but I will say it again..........it's not too easy on a proper dirtbike (try some Trails in the Dales or a local Club Trial........I assure you I do 'break into a sweat') and the rideout I did @ Hawes contained no 4 valve GS's as non of the terrain was really suitable and only the 80/100GS's and 650's were ok.....

Would you take your Tiger on serious dirt..........!!!!!!!

Just be warned on the 1200GS a minor incident can seriously deplete your bank account!!!

Well, a few dents on the pipes I can live with. More serious is that hitting something with the gear shift lever may damage the mechanism inside the gearbox. That's really expensive!

Protection device therefore built:

Conclusion, the 12GS is great, great & great. But it is not built for the enduro track.
