1200 gs screens

I found the buffeting a real pain so fitted some tobinators with a improvement but still plenty of wind, then put a laminar lip about as low as posible and after a few tweeks with the adjustment have got a vast improvment on standard,80mph before was uncomfortable before and now 100mph is still very bearable ,takes pressure of shoulders as well ps had to trim lip a little to clear hand guards ,am 5.8 with 29 inch legs

I don't know why but the winglets do seem to make a big difference. I have a Givi screen and Nippy Norman winglets and they are a huge improvement over the standard GS screen IMHO. Much better protection in the rain and less buffeting. I am 5' 10".

Thanks for that. I had a Wunderlich screen on my GS12 that I've just swapped for a 2008 GS12 but it did flex a lot which is why I'm looking for something else for the new one. Do you find the Givi one flexes at all and did you buy the screen as well as the winglets from Nippy?

My Givi Screen and the winglets do seem to flex a bit above 80mph, the winglets more than the screen. I did 900 miles in one hit last summer, at speeds up to 110mph returning from Denmark. No Problem with screen or winglets at high speeds crossing Germany.
I got the screen and winglets from Nippy Normans. They are not too difficult to fit but the winglets require drilling of the plastic panels.

Devon - Thanks for reply - looks like thats the way I'll go

Hi - just phoned Nippy and found he does not sell Givi screens. Could you have got it somewhere else?

Has there been an improvment in wind noise reduction since you fitted the lip and do you feel that it is the combination of the tobes and the lip or could it just be the lip that has cured the problem? One other thing, did you get the lip direct from the states or from somewhere in the uk?

Cheers

I think the combination did the trick for me as fitted the tobinators first which made a improvment on standard, got the lamminar lip direct from the company in the states, forgot the price but was not charged import duty.
personaly my screen is now half way down and the tobinators 4 groves from the bottom, you do need to experiment a bit at a time and i did need to trim a couple of mm of the side of the lip but i set it low as i like to see over the screen

Also one other thing I tried was a piece of transparent plastic aquarium pipe, slit down its length and pushed over the top lip of the screen. The idea being to break up the airflow better to prevent buffeting. Seemed to work a bit and very cheap and easy.

Just a second vote for the Givi screen and deflectors, I've found this set up to be great. I did fit the Givi screen first but added the deflectors a little later after driving a bike that had them fitted, they do make a difference, especially with windblast around the lower torso.

The adventure models have a small frame to support the deflectors so if you are just going to drill through the plastics to mount them, put some load spreading washers or plates on to prevent your plactics being cracked by the wind loading taken by the deflectors.

I rode my brother in law's gs with a givi and winglets and I found that the protection from the wind was good, the only thing that was lacking for me (at 6ft)was that I got more buffeting to my helmet and more wind noise than I get with my t-tech 'high and wide' which doesn't protect the torso so well. Chip, I was wondering if you can ride with your visor up because if you can it looks like you've got it sorted and I would be tempted to fit my old screen witn tobes and a lip. Does anyone know if winglets can be fitted to a standard gs screen?

The Bounder, Yes can leave the visa up to motorway speeds and the horrible bufeting has all but gone but not completly, personaly i am the wrong build for a gs rider having short legs 29 in and 5.8 tall so also have the low seat but may be about the same torso as you as you are taller.
My lip is fitted with about 3 in above the standard screen as i like to see over the top ok and can easily see 20 ft in front of the bike, also the tobinators seam to tilt the screen back and down .
I went out with the allen key to adjust upwards from one notch at the lowest seting and moved it upwards one notch at at time, when i got to four notches up it was a instant transformation and i then started adjusting the screen down for best results which for me was half way down.
unfortunatly the lip then touched the hand guards so had to trim a couple of mill of with the angle grinder ,result was that for me i am happy now to have long motorway blasts in reletive comfort, not possible before .

I fitted NN winglets with standard screen, big improvement. No more visor rattling at motorway speeds. The plastics are fairly soft (as I found while drilling them!) so cracking without Adv. supports shouldnt be an issue. 9000 miles on mine since fitting them, no probs.

can you tell me where you got that gps mount please?

I purchased the mount off a forum member in the 'for sale' section.
It's a mottorrad gps mount for the 1200GS pre-drilled for Garmin satnavs (I use it for my Zumo 550) It puts the gps in a good position to follow without obscuring the clocks.

I am not certain but I believe Migsel on the forum sells them for £125.
