1200 GSA Alloys

You do know that you are now being called a TWAT by every owner of a "shitty entry level GS" on the forum, who by the way make up the vast majority of the membership.

meh... he's been fishing around a while in a " GS' are plastic toys vs GSA is the 'real deal' situation" style... someone finally bit and poked him in the eye :)

Don't like spoked wheels.
Never have done since my old '61 Velo.
Bitch to clean.
Extra maintenance - tensioning etc.
Less unsprung weight with alloys and you can feel the diference.
Don't loose air pressure as quick as spoked wheels.

Spoked wheels are possibly stronger - but when was the last time you bent or broke a wheel of any type? [Macho off-road riders need not apply]
If spoked wheels are stronger why aren't alloys an option on the standard GS?
If spoked wheels are stronger why doesn't Rossi or Haga use them?
If spoked wheels are stronger why don't all BMW's come with them fitted - in fact why don't all bikes come with them?

It's just a style thing on the GSA - too boost the macho image of the rider.
Why do you think non-GS riders nickname the GS/GSA as "Tesco Trollies"?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - I think they are OK - of course I could spend £1,200 on a set of specials -R1200s wheels are very nice.

That was the answer I expected - personal choice, and perhaps more suited to your requirements. Hence why they are right for you, which is the most important thing.

You've also answered your own questions - the weight, complexity and cost of spoked wheels cover most of those reasons for not being fitted. I would totally agree that on the GSA there is a certain amount of projected image also.

Yes, I have broken alloys, and yes I have bent spoked wheels too :blast (although at least some of the time they have been recoverable)

From your reply it seems you may have thought that I'm having a dig - hopefully this will show that was not the case.

I can live with being unpopular with the cheap seats!,one short life why compromise? I am a twat though!

Hmmm. Let's add to the banter.

A friend of mine rides a GSA with spoked wheels. His front wheel got a slight bend in it. According to BMW unrepairable. Only way out : new wheel, at a hefty price.

Don't let anybody tell you that spoked wheels are always 'mendable'. And if the spokes are adjustable, most dealers are incapable of fixing a slightly warped wheel.

:hide

I'd expect that view from BMW, but equally nothing is indestructable.

Always worth consulting a wheelbuilder for a second opinion...I've been amazed at some of the stuff they've been able to save in the past.

In this case 2 companies in Belgium capable of doing such a repair, approached by my friend, agreed with BMW...

At which point, one would accept it's properly ronnied, without question.

However, as you pointed out, BMW would always look to unit replace for any level of damage, whereas in some cases it might actually be fixable by the above companies who have the know-how.

Stored in garage ready to go back on when it's time to sell.

I'm not that silly, nobody wants a GSA with alloys fitted! :augie

If you do want to let em go I'll have 'em for a suitable price, Im after some for my shitty ordinary alloyed GS:D

Which road version is that? Oh a GS!

Sorry, forgot all you macho GSA riders that tackle the far flung corners of the worlds dirt roads ect.

[Apologies for those who don't fit the following]

Most GSA owners never get past the local Tesco's. Just have a look at the GSA's for sale on here. Most haven't done 4-5K a year, so don't start any purist crap. It's a bike that has the bits I need to do the traveling I do (20k per annum on weekends and holidays] and how it looks is up to me. At least I won't get mistaken for a Ewan or Charlie wannabe!!

look at these guys who never go past the local pub meet either:D

i think the wheels look great:thumb:thumb on a LT:D

:troll1

Does that mean i can't put wire wheels on my ' shitty entry level GS' ? :tosser

Think I've touched a nerve, the entry level coment was made to me by a salesman and to be honest it holds true as they are an entry into GS1200 ownership being the lowest price version,I suspect they are also seen as a softer road bias version within bmw as can be seen with the cheaper running gear, mass produced alloy wheels, plastic luggage, smaller screen,no crashbars,no enduro option ect.Aimed at the sector of the market who wants the image that goes with ownership but not able to do the real deal

No nerves touched here.

WTF is "the real deal"?

The R80GS was the first GELANDE/STRASSE it had SPOKED WHEELS and a F#CK YOU attitude, however over the years the gs got soft and became the darling of the BORN AGIAN sector. The GSA however retains the DNA of the first bikes and is the REAL DEAL,the TUBELESS SPOKED WHEEL is a design ICON and if you can not appreciate that then you are a CRASS C#NT.

Post as it shows in forum.

I would normally not respond to posters who SHOUT.

But in your case sweetie I'll make an exception. :comfort

I object to being called a CRASS C#NT.
I object to your inference of being a BORN AGAIN rider, but if I were it would be my choice to start or return to motorcycling without being attacked on this forum by a bigot.
I object to your purist, badge-blind, fanboy, anorak type observations about me and my motorcycle. I'm me. It's my bike. So F*ck off and mind your own business!
I object to you denigrating members of this forum who ride "shitty entry level" versions of the GS, whether it be by choice or financial reasons. Not all want or can afford a GSA.

Finally, I now object to you, your holier than though attitude, your lack of respect for other members, bigotry, ...... need I go on?

You should learn to respect others choices and not ram your opinions down other peoples throats.

The beauty of the TUBLESS SPOKED WHEELS for me is that one monday an engineer went into the office and thought **** IT today I'm going to reinvent the wheel and that to me can only come from the firms NAZI DNA and I love that link to history.

Oh and as an adendum, the bit above you deleted after posting? :blast

You actually like to think of a link between NAZI DNA and a GS? :ronno
BMW may just distance themselves from that comment!! :augie

Full post that came through on my email:

The R80GS was the first true GELANDE/STRASSE,it was-is off road biased and had no elec gubbins or other exec bollocks. It had SPOKED WHEELS and a **** YOU attitude, but over the years it became soft and turned into just another GS, the darling of the BORN AGAIN biker.
The GSA's however hold on to the DNA of that original concept and are the REAL DEAL,if you want to DILUTE that DNA and BASTARDIZE your GSA then go for it you CRASS ****.

Chill out lads:):)

we all have a love of motor bikes no matter when we started and if we came back after 20 years ,plus we do not all have loads on money to spend on them.

Elefantmanshawn - The last few words of your last post in this thread are a bit strong mate. :rob

nothing each to there own, you'll end up with a bike that looks like a gs trying to be a GSA,I sugest you should maybe have bought the road version in the first place and saved money as it comes with alloys already for that mass produced look

Re read your post elefantmanshawn, it starts with 'each to their (sic) own'. As for 'that mass produced look', last time i checked, the GSA rolled off a production line too. You've given your opinion that you don't like the wheels on red1's GSA. Big deal, you don't own it and don't ride it - wind your neck in and move on.
