From Adv Rider, courtesy of Diomedes from a bike show in USA, he attended

We drove up to DC for the Cycle World International Motorcycle Show last weekend. I learned the 1200 GSA would be there, and having reserved one at my dealer, I wanted to see it in person.

The bike did not disappoint. I've met GS owners who seem very interested in citing any number of reasons not to like or buy the Adventure, but when I looked at the two bikes alongside one another, I was glad not to be saddled with that baggage.

Almost embarrassed to post such poor quality photos, but they are all I managed to get...

Partial Integral ABS..............is that non-linked - but still Servo assisted brakes (Check spec sheet in last pic!)

I don't know about the rest of you but that looks like a very delicate bike to me.
The 1150 ADV looks like a two wheeled tank, the 1200 looks a bit too pretty for my taste. :ymca

Just my opinion. :nenau

A fine looking machine :clap

Maybe in 2 or 3yrs time! :thumb

Bank account permitting :spitfire

I belive that is the mountingpoints for the US-spec charcoal cannister (the black cylinder right behind).

Does anybody know why the adv is 20 odd kilos heavier than the base bike. OK the cylinder guards etc account for some weight but I wonder if the have beefed up the frame.

No, partial integral means that the brake handle will affect both front and rear brakes but the brake pedal only brakes rear wheel. Most linked (integral) models are set up that way.

Full integral (where the brake pedal works on both front and rear brakes as well) can be found on the LT and the old RT if I remember correctly.

Engine bars and that huge thing wrapped around the tank on top of that, all steel!
Steel luggage rack.
Longer travel means heavier suspension components.
Bigger tank.
Bigger windscreen with additional fasteners.
Bigger front fender.
Spoked wheels are heavier, 0.1 front and 1.6(!) kg rear.
Cylinder protectors.
Larger capacity battery.
More power from generator means it is likely heavier.
Larger foot pegs and hand protectors add a little weight and the adjustable pedals may do that as well.
If we're talking wet weight the additional petrol will be at least 9 kg.

The only thing I know of which probably is lighter on the Adventure would be the aluminium handlebar.

The rear frame and centerstand is different but I don't expect it to be much heavier.
This thread suggests that those changes will mostly also be found on the standard GS.

But my guess is that they also don't lie as much on the Adventure weight. When introducing the R 1200 GS they had this massive campaign about it being 30 kg less than R 1150 GS. That meant they had to have wet weight at 225 kg but to my knowledge it has always been about 15 kg heavier when weighed in tests. Integral and ABS adds close to 5 kg but what about the other 10 kg??? Perhaps they thought it was embarrasing and decided to lie a bit less this time?

I've heard spinners are a factory fit option......nice.

Jonny,

having seen the thing in the flesh, can you give us an idea of how much bigger / taller the screen is than the standard 1200 unit? I have been thinking about getting a new (larger) screen, but none of the aftermarket ones have the additional support bracket shown in the pics. If the ADV screen will fit on the GS (and I can't see why it shouldent be a straight swap) then maybe it's worth the wait.

I attended the DC Motorcycle show and saw the 12GSa. It really wasn't that much different from the 12GS.

Anyhow, here are a few pictures of the various bikes I saw:

01-R1200GSA.jpg

R1200GS Adventure.

Nice bike, taller, too tall for me.

01-R1200GSA-me.jpg

You can see how impressed I am.

01-R1200GSA-screen.jpg

I might try a test ride to see if the screen will work better. Looks like it might.

01-R1200GSA-width.jpg

That tank is big, but I bet the wind protection in winter and rain will be pretty good.

01-R1200GSA-price-list.jpg

The salesman said the crash bars will definitely be standard equipment, and therefore not listed.

Strange thing to say considering what IS listed, but he was a bit of an arrogant ass, so I blew him off. He works for Bob's BMW

Anyhow, not a bad show, and BMW had some great bikes on display. The K1200GT, R1200GSA and R1200S were all preproduction bikes, the GSA was number 4. Well done BMW! :D
