1200 GSA TANK BAG

Hi Ballistic,

The map pocket takes an A4 sheet no problem. The bag is tapered, it's wider at the top and narrower where it sits on the tank. (Bit like a mushroom)

It is fiddley at the front, but it seems to be easier to attach if you use both hands and reach around the screen.

Oh bugger... I suppose I'd better get one then!:(
I've had an original tank bag for the last year, on my old 1200, it's a brilliant piece of kit, but it's annoying on the GSA when you try to do U-turns etc... it pushes up against the brace on the handlebars.
I know what you mean about the front fastening, but you soon get used to doing it... looks a bit odd at petrol stations though... I get some funny looks, as if I'm trying to sh@g my bike from the front:eek:
Anyone want to buy a 'second-user' BMW tank bag?

On my receipt it has C71.60.7.709.149. The manual has "order no. 01 29 7 709 210. Hope this is of use. Can't check the bag as it's on the bike and it's having its 600 miles service. :o

Thanks John,
I quoted the part number, and it's the same one as the bag I've already got.
I'm taking the bike in on Tuesday for its first service, they'll have one in by then.

Had a look at the ‘new’ GS tankbag last night and thought you might like to know what the differences were, over the ‘original’ GS tankbag.

1. The whole bag itself is smaller, particularly at the front… they have lost the ‘bulge’ that touched the crossbar of the adventure and made full-lock turns awkward.
2. The height has been reduced by about a third, but there is a zipped extendable section which allows the bag to expand, similar to most other tankbags. I think, even in the extended position, the capacity is a little less than that of its predecessor.
3. The top flap zip now has little loops on the zip-pulls, so you can padlock the zip in the closed position.
4. The most important change, to my mind, is the increase in size of the map pocket… it will now take a full A4 sheet with ease, and consequently, a two-section wide Michelin map, for those of you that use such things. The ‘roll-up’ Velcro opening now has some reinforcement behind it.
5. As has been mentioned previously, the awkward/fiddly hook fixing under the VIN plate remains, but the rear fixing now has the option of the sticky Velcro pad on the tank or a hook under the tank centre panel.
6. My original tankbag was £150; these are £158 (Pidcock’s BMW price).

I think I’m going to let my heart rule my head and buy a Touratech waterproof tankbag (£1177 + P&P). I regularly ride with a Tosser with the standard Touratech tankbag and I’m jealous of how quickly and easily he can detach the bag at petrol stations, B&Bs etc. The other nice touch with the Touratech one is that the map pocket detaches easily… i.e. you can take the map with you when you stop for a coffee, or a black pudding toastie etc. Finally, there are elastic straps at the sides in which to shove your gloves, and a couple of external pockets round the side which I might be able to reach whilst sitting on the bike…. with my gut, I can’t access the GS bag’s external pouch unless I get off the bike… it’s nice to be able to have quick access to a wet cloth to de-bug your visor whilst sitting at traffic lights.

If anyone has one of the Touratech bags, especially on a 1200 Adv, I’d be interested to hear any positive/negative comments… I’ve not ordered mine yet, although, knowing Touratech’s track record on deliveries, that may be a whole new ball game:eek:

That's an expensive tank bag

BTW good write up on the BM bag, one thing is that it can be waterproof if you want by faffing about with the inner. Mine was slightly cheaper from Williams :)

IMHO, it doesnt look like BMW spent much time thinking about that new rear fixing... unless its the original velcro that its been stuck to... I wonder how lond it will be before people start seeing cracks forming in that piece of plastic at the back of the tank...

I've found the trick to fitting the front hook is to get the bike on full left lock, I've then got enough space to get my hand in and fit the clip with ease.

I asked my dealer (Max BMW in New York) if they would 'swap' my GS bag for one of these smaller GSA bags and they said yes! I had only bought the bike a couple of months ago and due to the snow had not used the tank bag (or bike really!).

Delighted - to my mind a much better size - the old bag was just too big - like sitting behind an elephant! The newer one also seems to have some nicer details.

Very pleased.

It does make me wonder if the dealers are aware about the GS bag being too big on the GSA and that it can restrict the steering - and will change a bag if asked?????
