I am sure you have heard this before.....................but, here I am about to undertake a big trip and with just a couple months of ownership I thought I would change the oil and familiarise myself with wheel removal (I know I am going to need tyres during the trip). Fist up the BMW oilf filter tool I have does not fit - same diameter as the old filters just a new shape........blast, so that will be a screwdriver and hammer through the old one then - what a mess!
Next up lets have a look at the BMW tool kit (not looked before) I can not believe it............couple of screwdrivers, oil filler cap remover and a couple of small wrenches and trox keys. BUT noway of removing the wheels - how the hell am I meant to get that front wheel off???
No time to do anything about it now - I am sure that a tyre shop will have tools?
What to do in the future? I see reference in the handbook to a supplemental tool kit with the tools needed to remove wheels etc and what looks like some sort of tray. Question is does anyone know if this 'tray' of extra tools fits under the seat OK? I know that I could make up an extra tool kit (I have seen posts about folks doing this and always wondered why when BMW have always historically supplied such a comprehensive kit - I just assumed my new bike would have the same tools as before) but the trouble is that it probably won't fit under the seat so I am interested in a tool kit that fits.
I see a lot of folks who reckon that each generation of bikes gets more cheaply made..........I don't subscribe to this myself as I know that those claims go back at least 40 years - I have owned these bikes now for almost 20 years and I reckon that yes, things do change but that the quality remains consistant. There have always been disgruntled folks talking about failed bearings, seals, paint finish, chrome finish etc. Though I was disgruntled to have to buy a second ignition key and now a proper tool kit - these must be cost savings............So any advice on the 'extra' BMW tool kit would be appreciated.
