1200 or 1250 clear mind

Best changes I have made to mine are the tyres (CTA3). Several BHP more would not make me any faster on real-life A to B, but improving confidence in the handling has had a more positive effect on my "keeping up with the boys". Each to their own, 125 or 134 bhp would not make much difference, 125bhp is plenty for UK roads, it's not a S1000RR !!!

I’ve done the same switch (GS rather than GSA) to a lightly used 1250. I absolutely love my 1250 but I can’t help thinking I would have got better value for money (ie smiles per £) if I’d kept the 1200 and bought a Royal Enfield Interceptor as a plaything.

That's basically what I did.

Bought an Africa Twin CRF1000 for £9000 instead of spending £7000 changing to the R1250.

Now I have two bikes to play on, which is much better in my eyes :thumb2

My R1200GSA Goldilocks is a bloody good bike and with only 20,000 miles it's just run in :D

Lord of War, did you pull out your 1200 suspension yourself? What kind sold a job is it?

Looks like a complete PITA to me which is why I’ve not bothered yet, but longer term I’d hope to get it to Denz0 for re-spring and fettling.

I had the dealer fit the rear during service and the front by a local independant, about £200.00 all in.
I can earn enough money to pay them to do it in half the time it would take me, they have all the tools etc.

Tried the 1250, nice, but not worth the 8,9k to change. 37 k on mine, decated and wait for it Hilltopped which fills the mid range gap nicely. So could be another bike instead. Best alround. Stay safe folks.

Considered changing my 2014 GSA for a new 1250....probably would have been +£10k to change.

However, like Warlord, decided to upgrade my existing GSA and go for a second bike with the spare cash.... (K1600GT or maybe a V4 Tuono).

Upgraded the GSA with new suspension ...Tractive ESA Front & Rear plug & Play..... and Remus exhaust system.

Some suspension stripdown pics ....

Not a difficult jobbie.... front strut is a bit a pain to in order to get the the top mounting bolt.:thumb2

Really good so look like best money to spend is tyres, I have already, and new shocks, no wizard gadgets needed.

If you equate faster in a straight line to be better then the 1250 is better.
If a rider does not use all the 1200 has to offer and has no desire to ride faster between the corners then the 1250 is a waste of money.
For me corners have always been the fun part, not the bit between. I would have no more fun on the 1250.

The 1250 out of the corners is faster and better than the 1200 , and to be fair into the corners as your carrying more speed as the bike just asks to be ridden , the 1200 was brilliant but the 1250 is so much better , more torque , nothing to do with top speed or straight roads , it puts the power down better when you need it as you pull out of the corners etc . Said this before , but it would be a backward step for me to have a 1200 now as the new bike is just better more power and ….

Yes, I did mine myself. Mainly because I've already got my toolset and clean workspace, and I like to clean everything while it's all in bits.

It's straightforward, if you've got the tools.

Otherwise it'll be a pain in the arse, and you'd be better off paying someone to do it.

Cheers Warlord.

I have the tools and the ramp, I’ll give it a go later in the year.

Now, who wants to tell him???

Exactly, not worth starting another tuning thread. Although might make a change from BLM and Covid posts :)

Please no tuning, my stupid idea to think, many good ideas here with shocks and tyres, tuning was my worst idea.

If you can afford the 1250 by all means get it...It is a Huge improvement over the 1200 ! Not so much in hp as in TORQUE...It pulls so much stronger through the powerband and gets to pretty much the same top speed of roughly 140 mph quicker...Much more fun to ride. The 1250 feels much "thicker" as far as power goes. For me if it had another 25 hp on top somewhere between 8000 where the 1250 reaches it's peak and 10000 rpm it would be the perfect motorcycle power plant for road-riding ! Fuelling is perfect between 2000 and 9000 rpm...Very strong torque just the top=end rush is missing.Nothing a R1400GS couldn't fix...:D

I don't get it? these are not sports bikes. If I want that I'll go out on my R1.
But for the bike it is, the 1200 is way fast enough... I don't need any more power at all so will be keeping my 1200 for some time to come.

Yes agree, I had bad thoughts, but all is better now, I take my tyre and suspension tablets.

The whole reason I got a GS was to slow down a bit as my last touring bike was a ZZR... to start chasing HP again does not add up... that said, you could still lose your licence in no time on the 1200.
I did 365 KM per hour on mine last time out LOL or so the trip report tells me on my Nav.. there you go, how fast do you want... think it go a bit confused coming out of a tunnel for some reason (actualy about 60 mph :) )

I see some here can make that speed with 1250 :beerjug:
