I used to own a very handmade (or heavily customised) R850 desert race bike. It was based on a R650 motor with 1000cc jugs giving around 850cc. Was a real weapon and weighed in at around 165kg, anyways its sold now. I was thinking that the price of 1200cc bikes has come down so far that they could be a great base for new racer. I was thinking conventional 48mm WP forks, 21 front with lots of lightening being undertaken wherever possible. Has this been done yet? Any idea where I can find some info?

This is NOT my bike but it was mechanically similar and by the same builder, Paul Rooney.
,
Thanks

Would the headstock/subframe of a 1200 be strong enough to mount stock forks on?

The HP2, Scrambler, etc have different frames.

A Hossack front end is cheap to make (if done the way Norman does it) and does not need a heavy headstock.

This could get interesting
How light are HP2 Enduros?

There is a guy called John Wilkinson who posts on the R1150gs owners FB forum who has built a HP850 and 1100 and is working on a HP1150.
Its basically a stripped down oilhead with conventional forks, 21/18 wheels and an 'R' tank rather than the GS tank.
Not sure what the weight was. He binned the FI as well in favour of air head carbs presumably of the R100. He made a reinforced headstock to take the forks.

Speak to John he has done the mod to numerous oil heads ,although the conversion looks simple in itself it's not till you start to undertake it that you realise how much work is involved as a one off.he can supply the " subframe" at a very reasonable price.
I fully understand the 1200 is a different bike but the development John has put into the earlier bikes is fairly easily applied to the later model and will make for a very useful off road tool.
