1200 service costs

Got my 12 plate air cooled serviced today, 27k approx service so "big one" in thier words, guy says to me it'll be about £500....so i get there and on paying the guy trys to hit me with a £650 bill

few words exchanged and the service cost was reduced to £500

my question is, is £650 the real price or are these guys pulling my tinkle.....

It's not for having a pop at the dealer, (well maybe for me) it was just to clarify these costs, i'm sure my little tinkle was getting pulled by 20 year old kids which did'nt sit well with me

It takes me 3.5-4hrs to do a big service, altenator belt, valve clearances (never had to adjust them), oils, filters, plugs, rear drive fluid change and spline greased and brakes bled.

The boxer engine is easy to service yourself, there are pleanty of videos on forums and youtube. Just take your time, its a Saturday morning job at the most, then you will know its been done correctly. I find it very satisfying. There is no booking it in and hanging around waiting for the dealer to finish, not to mention the money saved.

I had a big service split over 2 visits

1st section was £280, but that included rear pads (and with some discount)

2nd part will cost me £180, and thats including a delivery and collection and again some discount

Yes providing , you have the parts, and anything needed that's identified as needing replacement

How many punters, have the required shims if they need changing, spare pads, plugs gaskets etc etc, to hand , not to mention a direct line to the mothership , warranty etc if anything goes wrong, or needs expert tech support ?


+ if you feck it up its you fault and you have to live with it

All you need is a bit of forward thinking, getting the oil, filters, brake pads etc in before starting the service. As for the shims, out of tens of thousands of cam heads and wet heads sold, you would be hard pressed to find .001 % of bikes that needed a shim replacement in under say 50,000 miles at the earliest.

A bike under warranty is slightly different regards servicing, because of the possible warranty issues.

£500 for a normal service with no extra replacements other than plugs? It does depend on their hourly rate then, there's VAT on top, it can, get up to £500 or thereabouts.

Just done my own, roughly, the costs for parts was; oil filter £7 air filter £10 eng. oil 5 litres 15w 50 fully synth. £26 plugs £32 gear oil £12 = £86. 4 to 5 hours work and the job is done.

A caveat to that is, if there are valves needing re-shimming and that's done then that will involve more time, and of course, the cost of the shims which aren't cheap. I have done a re-shim on
mine once in 74000 miles.
