I have been out for a test ride today on the new WC GS and the dealer couldn't answer what the standard downpipes were made of. He was telling me that the chrome option is so the downpipes dont rust and standard might be zinc coated mild steel!

The spec sheet quotes "Stainless steel exhaust system with acoustic system". I would tend to think that "System" must include downpipes and so either:

BMW are using a very low quality S/S if it's going to rust (which I doubt)

Or

The Dealers doesn't know what he's talking about.

So, can anyone confirm that the downpipes are S/S?

Yes. Stainless steel downpipes.
Will they discolour and look like rust in places, Yes within a few dozen miles.
Will the exhaust rust away over several years, NO it will just discolour.

The Chrome option is the silencer finish, just decorative and personal choice.

Must be hard for sales reps to get to know the facts, they need to know the ins and outs of --------six or seven models, with a few different specs of each.

Thanks for the reply.

I thought they were S/S. My Yamaha WR250FW Enduro has the same and as you say, they discolour every ride. But at least you can clean & polish off without the danger of rusting. A bit of Scotchbrite & Autosol shifts the muck.

£110 option saved:)

Money saved and a better product into the bargain as I believe the chrome option is simply chromed mild steel which will most certainly rust with time.

The chrome looks nice when the bike is new, but they go blue after a while, which is a bitch to get rid of.

For reference, here are pics of my chrome exhaust after 2500km.

Don't polish the chrome with T-Cut or any abrasive polish to clean it. Just use normal car polish or tar remover.
