1200adv

Based on the fact that most people, I guess, will buy a bike on its looks as much as its handling ability, etc, I think it should be no real surprise that the 12ADV is getting the interest it appears to be. I include meself in this. I have never really taken to the standard 12, as I felt it lacked the presence of the 1150/1100. For me, the standard doesn't have that almost indefinable 'something'.

However, although I have only seen photos of the ADV, it does it for me. I think it is more in keeping with the 1150, and that suits me. At the end of the day, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say. I would very much like one in due course, and no I am not a shallow poser. I want one because, like the 1150 when it first came out, it just looked right...to me.
Thats all that matters, isn't it?

Cheers
:D

My thoughts entirely.

I just don't get the excitement about the Adv. Styling changes, a bigger tank and a higher price. Previous 12GS critics are now smitten. Didn't take much, did it? :nenau

But then I don't get 4x4 cars for the urban poseur either. I would choose another 5-series instead of an X5, as the latter is a styling exercise based on the former's chassis, with poorer economy, a higher price, less interior space, dodgier handling(although not bad for a big machine, I will concede), minimal off-road ability and a dubious image. So why would you choose one?

It's about style, image and ego rather than true ability.........as it is with the 12Adv.

Look, if your wife won't let you buy one, just say so. We won't think any less of you............. :dabone

I was getting the fork seals changed at BMW Hertford and a fully kitted model was outside waiting for its new owner. It looks very front heavy compared to my 1150 but looks the dogs dangles.

Yeh - it needs a 21" front wheel to improve its looks! Still the dogs danglies though but too bloody heavy!!!!

B*ll*cks. Rumbled. :( Being strictly accurate, such a conversation hasn't taken place within the Gonzo household, but nor will it until the 1250 Adv Plus comes out. :thumb

That and the fact that I don't want to be perceived to be attempting to compensate for something (or a lack of it............) ;) :dabone :mmmm

Well. I went and had a quick gander at the beastie this afternoon. First impressions?

Loved it. I want one. If that makes me shallow, a poser, and a victim to form over function, then so be it, I really don't give a toss.

I sat on it, and it just felt right, much as my 1150 did when I first sat on that. And I had never ridden that either, I decided to have it before I rode it.

It feels like my 1150, i can reach the floor with teh standard seat, and my legs felt more comfortable, as the pegs are clearly lower that those of the 1150. I love the looks. Its a big bruising bastard, but thats what GSs are about aren't they?

Now I have to wait, as there is no way I can afford it yet, and wil not be able to do so for a good coupld of years, i guess. Still, they will be on the 'pre-owned'! market then. I had to wait to get the 1150, I can wait for this.

Now then, where's me sawn-off, must get down to Barclays to make a...erm.... withdrawal :D

I went for a look too - ended up testing the standard 12 and was seriously taken with it. I agree with the above about presence and size etc. But also I too can't see how an extra 25kg even without the extra fuel can do anything but detract from the fabulous test ride I had. I'll ride the A before making up my mind but I think this may be the first time I buy a bike that I didn't much like the look of.

Hang on a minute I bought the 1150 didn't I? (and then it's looks grew on me).

I bought my 1200GS purely as a road bike (herasey  ) and as such I value its (relative) low weight and 'hooning' handling.

From that perspective the GSA seems pretty pointless to me I'm afraid. The extra suspension travel isn't going to improve the handling, nor is the extra weight and bulk of the bike.

As an 'off road' bike it also seems pretty pointless to me - it really is beyond me why anybody would want to do a RTW or go green laning on one for that matter.
For a RTW a 650 single is going to be a far better proposition every time and for 'laning' a 250/350 single is more than you ever need.

Possibly the only Beemer I'd consider taking off road would be an 80 or 100 air head.

I guess my take is that the GSA is a two wheeled 'Chelsea Tractor' :D

I'm interested to see what others think :hide :)

I tend to agree with the Baron's comments.

I've been very happy with my R1100GS and though about the 1150 but dealer in Jersey was totally useless and offered me only 25% of book value for trade in. I was a bit disappointed with look of standard 12 and knew an Adventure model would be along to follow. Nearly put down deposit after NEC show but unsure about which dealer to use in UK.

Visited Ocean in Plymouth yesterday as this is nearest dealer I think. Rode for over an hour in pouring rain and dripped water all over their posh showroom floor. Booked Adv for test ride next week and seriously considering trading up. Not sure to go for one in September or wait until this time next year.

You're not alone Ottomunch.. same here! :thumb ..

I actually like the standard GS for its 'lean' looks. But I also think the ADV looks great too... (fence wobbling now....)

:beerjug: to all GS'ers I say.

Because you can

It's worth it to see the reactions of the pogo stick riders when you complete the same section of flooded road they've just done on their wee thumpers :thumb

The Adv is a competant green laner :D
