1200GS Brakes Servo / ABS /Servectomy - what is / what can ????

Can someone please clarify the R1200 2005 - 2007 braking system debacle?

I'm confused.

From what i have understood so far ..

ABS isnt fitted to all models ? in this date range (optional extra?)

ABS can fail - fix can be a simple flush or a new abs unit (mucho mullah)

Servo assist is on all models

Servo assist can fail - servectomy can be done but ABS no longer works?


2007 & onwards models have new unit so not affected?


What is the killer fail? is it the ABS side or the servo assist ??

I'd like to look at some bikes next week but trying to work out what to or not to look at is confusing

Its an "Integral" unit

Hence "Integral Servo assisted ABS braking" Or Servo ABS braking

You only get Servo with ABS.................. Non ABS is ordinary brake

Post 2006 is a different linked system but NOT servo assisted

but simplest way to check a bike is if the ignition is on and you pull the brake lever (or press footbrake) you will hear an electrical spinning motor sound if its later ABS this sound wont happen

P.S. If you look at the brake rotors and you do not see a pressed steel ring of a lesser diameter inside a brake rotor or an ABS sensor on the fork leg)Its not ABS

Ok that's that bit understood. :)

So if i find a 2006 or earlier without ABS there is no servo issue to worry about?.
 
It's not even an issue. Mine has servo-ABS, if or when it fails I'll get it bypassed for less than £200 and have 'regular' brakes which by all account are great anyway. I'd pay more attention to the final drive and also clutch condition because that's a split-the-bike-in-two job.
 
From what I gather, any problem with the abs unit still leaves you with brakes (and a flashing warning on the dash).
 
2008 onwards had the same type of ABS as the twin cam. It looks like a car ABS unit, solid aluminium block with a black motor bolted t one side. The later bikes also have a tougher (though that's not saying a lot) final drive.
 
Known as residual braking. And shitting yourself. If you have never experienced the wonders of a good solid brake lever/pedal but no brakes or to be precise about 1% brakes it's not to be envied. I suggest you try it. JJH

I wasn't implying it would be ok to leave it like that. You'd either fix the servo/abs issue or bypass it. If it happens on mine the bike gets parked until it's fixed.
