Hi all,
Does anyone have a 'code' for the engine silver paint colour on a 2004 1200GS ?
When I bought mine recently, both cylinder head covers were marked, probably caused by falling over etc I would guess.
I seem to remember a number of owners have written/spoken about having these powder coated, but that would need a colour match anyway.
Anyone had this done ?
If so, it would be my first choice, but who would be the best people to do it etc ?
Help.
Thanks
Graham

Mine fell over about 18 months ago (one of the centre stand bolts sheared probably because the Ferry company wratchet starpped the bike down too much) anyhow the damage was a badly scratched engine protector cover and minor damage to the crash bar.

I took the engine protector off, wet and dried it with 400 grit filled the gouges cleaned with thinners and sprayed it with Hammerite silver smooth aerosol.
Hey presto new engine cover for less than £20 and about an hours work.
As for tha crash bar I sprayed the affected area fading out at each side of the damage. The colour match on the bars is not as close but you need to get on your knees and look up to really see where i have painted so it's not an issue.

This may sound like a botch but the silver is an extremely close match to the BMW alloy coating. I found this out when i did my F650 forks they were really shitty cleaned them sanded them sprayed them, done correctly and its very hard to tell the difference.

The trick is few light coats about 15 min apart dont put too much paint on. try it on a test peice first.

Dropped GS ??

Hi Jersey,
Since I posted earlier, I've emailed a company called Triple S, they quote/list being able to rocker covers etc etc. I've asked them if they can match the paint as well.
I'm really tempted to have a go myself, but my 'natural' pessimistic side says I should get some head guards damn soon before I repair them both and then drop the bloody bike myself !
I'll update this post when I hear from them.

not sure there is any point in colour matching too analy as there is so much distance between all the silver parts and they all weather/heat fade differently.

I used Wurth products as listed bellow:-

Etch Primer - product code; 0893 460 112
Lacquer Spray special - Silber [sic] - Product code; 0893 351 900
Lacquer Spray special - ClearProduct code; 0893 51 930-D

I got these from the Wurth trade counter which required a bit of a blag a you should have an account.

It's not difficult rub off all loose paint, fill any corrosion with epoxy metal, sand smooth, key in any remaining original paint that is well bonded, 3x primer, 2 x silver, 2 x clear.

After reading a good few reviews I painted the machined face as these are only covers I also notices signs of the original paint cracking along the machined edge.

did you tell triple s that the covers are magnesium alloy?

got the paint matched up exactly at a specialist supplier and the colour was Hyundai Wheat Silver with a matt finish top lacquer. Obviously thats not the paint that BMW uses but it is as exact a match as you could wish.
