I went out this morning and discovered the whole thing was REALLY DIRTY.
I phoned BMW assist and they were not interested. My dealer put the phone down.
Please be very careful if you wash it that you either take measures to prevent water filling the reservoir over the fuel pump or alternatively remove N/S side panel then remove the black plastic vented cover (this is the big round one located on top of the petrol tank). Inside this cover you will find a nice receptacle that will hold approximately half a cup of water (maybe BMW designed this as an emergency water supply for RTW travellers). If you have never dried out this area before you will find the aluminium heat sink of the can bus fuel pump controller to white with aluminium oxide (rust). Take a kitchen towel and carefully soak up all the water and then dry the area out. Replace side panel being VERY careful to replace the high tech plastic fastening at the BASE of the panel ***WARNING*** Failure to ensure the high tech secure fastening is indeed securely fastened could result in death or serious injury when the side panel blows off at high speed or at the very least when you report the incident on here be told smuggly told you're basically a tosser and there is absoloutley nothing wrong with this piece superior BMW design. Washing a 1200GS or for that matter taking one anywhere near any sort of water is fraught with danger and can cause a multitude of other problems -a Forum search will enlighten you as to these other horrors awaiting the unsuspecting rider. Then finally if all appears to be OK go out and ride it - er sorry one last thing - Not before you check the security of the Front Fork Pinch bolts !!!!
