1200GS Its the Dog's Bollocks!

I've now had my 12GS for just over 2 years and its just had its 12,000 service and running sweeter than my old grannies sewing machine . I've had NO trouble whatsover apart from a confused gear indicator (my fault I think, too fond of the clutchless changes and bafled it for a while!!) This bike is the best I've ever owned and just gets better with miles. A lot of folk come on this section to complain (and rightly so on a lot of occasions) but I think for every disgruntled owner there is 100 satisfied owners, you just never hear from them. I might be sorely tempted with the new model next year but it will be hard to part with my GS. I ride throughout the winter, just cut down to the good days up here in Scotland, rode many days up into the Angus glens and deeside last winter and its a joy with a bike that's made for these roads and conditions. A quick hose down and a spray of FS365 keeps the worst of the salt from eating your bike. I've just bought a Sargent seat, some new fastway pegs and Remus headers to tart it up a bit and add some comfort, intend to do a euro tour next year. So for anybody reading this section and getting a bit depressed, don't...get one, they are the dogs dangly bits!!

Had mine 5 years from new - 50,000 miles and a bit.

Never kept a bike that long or done that many miles on it.

Even if I could afford a replacement, I couldn't think what else to buy except a new 1200GS...

Yup - I concur. Had the current one for eighteen months/14,000 miles, toured England, Scotland, Wales, France, Germany and Switzerland absolutely trouble-free and in superb comfort. Best bike I have owned without question.

I'm in Scotland and ride year round too (no car licence!) Best bike I have ever had, Scotland also has the best roads in the world...

theyre fecking brill bikes, even though ive had a shed load of problem,s with mine over the past few months i wouldnt part with it for love no money
its my baby and my only mode of transport and theyre is nothing else out there to tempt me away, apart from maybe the new yam super tenere, but dont think it will match the gs in comfort and riding pleasure
mines done just shy of 18000 miles and just gets better and better the more i ride it!

Same for me as the good Mr Kelly.

Five years and still going strong, can't justify the expense of changing it for another bike of the same ilk. Piece of cake to service/maintain and a pleasure to ride. Not a sports missile but still a superb road bike.

Had a few problems though either fixed under warranty or easily myself so no worries.

I can't really fault either of my parallel twins from Yamaha (Super Tenere and TDM850), which is why I wouldn't hesitate in buying the new bike in whatever shape or form it comes out in. Plus you have to consider that BMW themselves have adopted the parallel twin in their own F series of machines, so it's not that they are an inheritantly bad design of engine.

I'd have that Superten' in an instant - rough and ready and a little bit uncivilised.

Mainstream parallel twins feel to me insipid. They may be superbly efficient, but ultimately uninspiring.

I had a superdream as well 250 and the 400, 2nd bike I ever bought was the 250 when you could on a learners licence, first was a Suzi TS250 (have you seen how much those fekkers go for on ebay ) The TDM on the other hand has always been a good bike IMHO.
Your kidding yourself on if you think that the super tenere is really going to hold a candle to the 12GS....its still the daddy boys and the new one will cement that I'm sure....115 horses and that fantastic handling...mmmm

Absolutely agree. I tested the new 1300GT earlier this year at a Balderston test day and was ready to PX the GS if I was sufficiently impressed. As it turned out, I was impressed, but not enough to trade in my 06 GS. As soon as I sat back on it and set off, I couldn't think of a good reason why I'd want to swap it and stuff another few thousand notes into the dealer's pocket
