1200GS? - MAKING A MISTAKE?

Bike magazine this month has a great article on the 1200GS, it is a great bike, but the 1200 Adv would seem better (mine arrives Oct).

Yep, keep your money on the bike. :clap

I have a 16500 miles 04 model, one of the first batch to come into the country, I've done 12500 miles in the last 18 months, it has been trashed, bashed & dropped. Toured at speed all over europe, in 40 degree heat and pishing rain, up and down alps and even done track days. Only thing to go...... a headlight bulb.

Get your bike enjoy it, and don't hang on the words of the GS moaners club...... :loopy :tosser

This is the best bike I have ever owned in 18 years of riding. :bow

Guys,
thanks for the reassuring messages,it is easy to get cold feet when you read the bad threads. The only thing that still concerns me, is the ability of the DIYer to fix it when it is out of warranty? Probably not as easy to fix as the air/oilheads???I have done miles and hours on both the GS and ADV, and for me and what I will do with it, the GS is right. Only hope it lives up to it mechanically!! I will stick with it!!
PS: Yellow ones are best!?
Regards Eng

Go YELLOW

always good advice for a first time 1200 owner, they are much slower and forgiving than the super quick blue ones.................get used to the yellow before upgrading to the blue or red :D

LOL!

As I've got a blue one i know what you mean, but the grey ones look a lot cooler to me!

To GS or not to GS

Having had the 1150 GS and the KTM 950 and now the owning a 06 GS I can tell you that the better bike is the 1200 as they all have their problems and I got rid ot the KTM because of its problems and the fact that KTM wouldnt honour their warranty in a way that I thought was acceptable.
So what I am trying to say is that all bikes have their problems in fact my 1150 had a few but BMW were much better at sorting them out and this guy would never go and buy a brand new KTM again.
2000 miles on my 06 1200 and the bike is great and I love it and cant get enough of it.

2005 1200 gs - having owned 3 BMs so far [r80/7 for 20 years (?!?), R1150R then the 1200GS) the 1200 gs is the best yet.

Use it for commuting - good visibility and comfortable in traffic and for longer trips. No regrets at all.

Ok - so the headlights aren't brilliant, but just fitted some aux lights so that is sorted.

Buy it.

Paul

I have a 05 1200 with 17,000 km on it.

I just love. It handes well and is fun to ride. It's better off-road then a bike it's size and weight has a right to be. :thumb

There are some people here who rag on the 1200 all the time. I just don't get it. The Fact is, it's a better bike than the 1150. Not that the 1150 is not a great bike too, it is. :thumb

Ride them all and get what you like.

Have you seen the new black ones? The new black is the new black!

There is a nice new black one sitting in at Park Lane

Bought mine Jan'05

Now done 14,000 miles and, apart from a couple of 'minor' electrical problems last year, it's going better than ever.

Mind you, I had to replace a headlamp bulb too!

Buy it, ride it and enjoy it! :thumb

Quicker

and of course once you have graduated to the marginally quicker blue or red you can then join the elite and get really fast gunmetal grey custom or of course a nice black........in fact any color is much faster than any of the standard one's..everyone knows that :D

Am I making a huge mistake

Yep you have. This site is notorious for shouting down dissenters. The bike is riddled with design and mechanical faults. It cannot take hard work and costs way too much for a naked bike in the first place.

For the original poster. As with most forums UKGSer has a minority of relentlessly vocal posters who obviously have some quite genuine concerns (conditions?). The problem is that they don’t seem to understand we have a search function, and therefore with incredible stupidy they post the same stuff over and over, and over, and over......again. GET A LIFE! :D :D

You said you had put a deposit down for 1st September. Do you have the bike yet?

This site is notorious for shouting down YOU for being a repetitive cock.

Otherwise there is a lot of useful information here and very helpful people.
