1200GS Popping and a Fartin!

Bought me a second hand 1200GS a couple of months ago whilst I am very impressed with its rideability etc I am surprised at how much popping and fartin there is from the exhaust under heavy breaking. A pal of mine suggested that it was possibly to do with digital fuel control (snappy throttle). The bike I test rode in Dundee and the GS800 were the same. I guess I need to know is this the norm and I'll just live and be happy with it, or is it a timing issue that needs looking at?

Or may'be after 30 years of riding I'm just a bad rider?

Any advice would be welcome

Just so long as the popping and banging you're hearing is in the exhaust can, that's fine. My first one started to pop and bang in the collector and that was indicative of a failed lambda sensor.

glad you asked this, as was going to also.My GS12 does it loads on the over run but seems it's normal, my old Commando does it less than the BM.
I like it though. just come back from france and even the missus suggested i get it looked at.

I have the full de-catted system from BOS with the carbon can fitted and no baffle.

The sound on the over-run is totally addictive

Pops and bangs so loudly people often duck...................I luv it!

If you are bothered about it then consider the following

It'll be worse if you are cat-less.

It'll be worse if you have a poor seal any where in the exhuast system as it can draw in the fresh air needed to ignite the unburnt fuel.

Try a TPS reset as that can make a difference

Mine did it more with the standard headers and can, since I fitted Keihan headers and Akro can it doesnt seem to do it much, gutted , just fitted a Accelerator Module, with a bit of luck that will bring back the poppin and a fartin on the overrun

A + feature of the bike, and deffo better with a full system. Pity they dont belch out flames

If you really want to get it banging and fartin, just rev it niceand high in any gear, then close the throttle. If you then just crack the throttle you'll be rewarded with a nice burble and the odd pop.

The less restrictive the exhaust, the better the noise. Enjoy the sound system

There was a whole gaggle of the new SR1000RR,s at the last track day i attended and they were poping and farting on the over run.
Its somthing to do with emissions the fuel being shut off on closed throttle.

When I had just the Akra can on my GSA12 it popped and farted like a good'un. Now, with decatted headers there's none - zilch. Very disappointing. Must be my fault for putting a tiny amount of exhaust sealant around the headers when I fitted them - doh. I have the Accelerator fitted as well - same thing. Nice noise though generally speaking but I did like the extras on the overrun.

I thought the popping on overrun was because they run quite lean,cat less headers will make it even leaner and risk pre ignition,thats why they have an anti knock fitted,good super unleaded like v power helps in the same way the acc mod does ,back fires on overrun is bad news for valves

The only bad news about GS valves is when they fall into the cylinder.

I love the popping and farting. I got it on my 1050 sprint, and loved it, but the Tiger 1050 didn't do it at all. Now I've got the 2010 GSA it's back and I'm loving it

I have noticed that in the last couple of hundred miles, the exhaust noise has got even beefier. It's starting to sound more and more like a Spitfire everyday

"....They all do that Sir." Up to a point only. You could do some serious damage so take it to a dealer and he will stick it on his computer and will tell you in a few minutes if the timing etc. is OK; that is the safe solution.
