Repeated from a post I made on ADVRider

Just got back from a 5500 mile trip from The Netherlands to Morocco and back... Rode some light offroad while there with Fanum and MikeP and others, so I feel confident that this thing works and is tough enough...

People there liked the box I whipped up to replace my rear seat, and bring the height of that area in line with my Givi adapter plate for the offroad bashing... (didn't want to risk breaking my Givi Maxxia as I needed it for the ride home)

As you can see I tried to maximise the area that I could use, without going beyond some basic construction techniques... I'd like to (if the interest was there) do another one out of fiberglass, with a mould, that would fill even more of the space...

As you can see below, I made it from wood glue, thin ply, and 1/4 round with a nailer... then put a layer of polyester and fiberglass on the outside for strength and weather proof ness... then I coated it with some cordura using contact cement for looks... The detail picture shows how I "lock" it... some panhead aviation screws go in the holes to blind nuts for a slightly hidden, 'tool required' removal of the lid... I only used them for the trip down...

Below are picture of my bike loaded for the trip down, Loaded while riding down there, and for the trip home.

For what it's worth, the US term for your 'rear seat replacement box' is a 'smuggler box'.

I used to have a Jesse rear plate (similar to Civil's pics) and thought of making something based on that. As you wouldn't need to remove it when piste riding it would be the logical place for first aid kit, tools, etc.

Not many people use top boxes when touring, though, and for me (with a 1200GSA) it would be better to assume the 1200GS rear carrier wasn't there so you would have a much longer smuggler box.

(bet you had fun filtering with the Micatech bags!)

Filtering....

I came home in 3 days from Marrakech... 2 hours from the end of the last day... (700 mile day following an 800 mile day...) I encountered the Antwerp Parking Lot at 6:00 PM....

I honestly found myself moving past stationary lorries with less than 2 inches on either side of me.... I always worry more about hitting mirrors with my bars (has happened.... one embarrassingly straightens the mirror and drives on...) The Micatech's are really not that wide... wider than the cylinders yes... ( I have to get the bike out of the back yard before putting them on) but not wider than the bars...

The 45 minutes of filtering woke me up anyways... :augie

If I had to carry all my gear offroad... I'd consider removing the rear rack, ditching the GIVI and making a longer "smuggler box"... but it is just so convenient when traveling on the road to open the Givi, remove my clothes bag.... stuff things from my Micatechs into the Givi... close and remove it from the bike and walk into the motel with a bag in each hand...

I've begun thinking about creating a solution (see more details here) and came across your thread. This is my latest design draft (more details here) and I am looking for creative input.
