1200GS Rear Wheel Bearings

It seems there was more of a problem on the 'first wave' of bikes Bert, mainly the April '04 ones...perhaps that explains it...? The early buyers got the worst problems by the looks of things...

I was collecting my bike from BMW of Manhattan today after its 6000-mile service and ran into a chap with an R12 like mine. He had 13,000 miles on it (delivered June 2004) and had just had the rear wheel bearings replaced after a near catastrophic failure out on the expressway. He was surprised to hear that those failures are not uncommon......

Thanks nadeem but at the same time, they get a replacement and have the same problem, sometimes over and over...
It seems that many of the riders with the issue has had at least twice the issue...
That is difficult to explain...

Yep there is that ...like yourself; I've had very few problems with my bike...

I believe that the problem was specific to one batch, manufactured in 04 and concerned a FDU housing machining error.

I have just had the same problem with the back wheel. I had the bike (Apr 04) given an 18,000 mile service (at 16k miles) and asked that everything to be checked for a 5k journey around Europe.

Second day (300 miles) after the service I hear this clicking around the back wheel. I notice a small amount of play on the wheel. After many problems finding the address of a BMW dealer abroad I am finally given an address in Switzerland. They said that it was the drive shaft and looked on the computer and found that it would be three weeks before they could get a replacement from BMW. They said that it was not dangerous and that it should get me about 5k miles before it went totally.

I was not happy with this so phoned my dealer who said that they had not heard of this problem before - only the wheel bearings going. Decided to take it very easy and cut out a large part of my holiday plans - took to a push bike and spent days walking the mts.

When my wife came out the clicking had stopped and the play on the wheel had not got any worse so I continued riding. After my wife had departed my grandson became the pillion and i noticed that after a day of hard riding in the Swiss Alps there was a tremendous amount of play on the rear wheel. I could not ride it anymore and got the help on BMW International help (Mondail) who were very good at getting me and the grandson home.

There are some issues here that i feel need addressing:
a) The dealer had missed the problem during the service which I noticed after 300 miles.
b) They had never heard of the issue before.
c) There was a major problem of finding the addresses of BMW bike shops abroad from everyone. This should be rectified.
d) My holiday was not totally ruined but it certainly cost a lot of problems and made me change my plans.
e) Will I ever have confidence again in the bike to make a long journey away from home.

Far from happy grandad
