I have a GS1200 on order but do not know which seat height to specify. My inside leg is 31inches (trouser size). For the best compromise between comfort and foot down security what would be best - the high seat, the low seat or the standard seat?
Cheers

I have inside leg 30 " just and I have both standard and low seats, I seem to be able to use both with little trouble. Using the lower seat most of the time as I have an airhawk fitted which makes the standard seat just a little to tall for my liking.

Suggest you take out demo bike with standard seat and do loads of town work on it, soon find out if it is low enough for you.

Ps the lower seat is a bit harder than the standard one.

:beerjug:

31' inside leg myself and have the standard seat...no problems with it...

30" inside leg and the low seat.

It's definitely not the most comfortable but it gives me more confidence especially when the panniers are full and I'm on uneven ground.

I'm a 31" inside leg, the standard seat appears fine to me, a word of advice, Corbin seats make feet down flat marginal at best and i found myself leaning to the left or right with only one foot down at halts.

I'm 31" i/side leg also. Standard seat with no real problem.
Tried the low seat ( a friend has one) and found it rock hard an less than comfortable. I persisted with the standard seat in it's lowest position and I am quite happy with it.:)

I have a 30" inside leg and use the standard seat on its lowest setting with little worries. I need to add plenty of preload when heavily laden or with a pillion to restore the ride height.

I'm about a 30" inside leg and I've got both the standard and low seats. I use the low because I've got quite a lot of preload cranked into the shock so that the bike will turn more quickly rather than "drag its arse like a dog with worms" (BIKE Magazine).

It's noticeable that the low seat results in a bit more knee bend but it's an acceptable trade off for me.

thank you all for the advice - I will spec the std seat. cheers. PS. Are the BMW crash bars as good as any? The site suggests there is a lot of chew with the others.

Opinion in crash bars is divided - a lot of people rate H+B but some say the BMW ones would absorb crash forces better.

Do a search and get some popcorn :D

My personal opinion is that the H+B bars (which I have) are very good in low speed spills, off road etc, but I can see that if you had a large crash, they might be too rigid and transmit forces to the engine that a different design would have absorbed.

They are also cheaper :D

Engine protection bars

I had the standard BMW ones fitted by the dealer when I bought the 'bike last September. You can see exactly what they look like - assuming that the brochure in English has the same photos ( in Peru) as the French version. In fact apart from the knobbly tyres at times my bike looked in a similar mud splattered condition during the winter - although I did NOT go off road. My feeling is that if BMW show the bars fitted for use in such conditions they are not simply cosmetic. Another advantage I found when I traded in my 1150 - also fitted with the BMW bars - the dealer was happy to take them and supply the new ones at no extra cost. What do they do ? They protect the bike when it falls over when badly parked or wheeling it around the garage - in an accident who can say ? One assumes that they are designed NOT to smash up the engine ! Still (touch wood) mine have not been used in any way except to fasten on my (insurance) disc holder. ! Brian
