1200GSA extended warranty option - any opinions?

Read the policy, that'll tell you.

No it won't! It merely states that components deemed to have failed due to fair wear and tear will be replaced at the owners expense. There would appear to be no definition of fair wear and tear. Methinks this might lead to differences of opinion depending which side of the argument you were on. I asked the question to see if anyone had experience of such disagreements.

What's rubbish about it?
I wouldn't either given the choice.

Johnny is one of the UKGSer 1200 knocker brigade who seems to think that prior to the 1200 coming out that nothing ever went wrong with the 1100/1150 varients, when in fact the reality is very different. That's what is rubbish about it.

Didn't he own one for a few seconds?

This issue was debated on a K1200S site I used to frequent when I had one of those in the garage.

There are other warranty insurers out there, E.G. Bennets or Warranty Direct (who advertise in the BMW club mag).

Why not check out their prices and level of cover - might be able to get the peace of mind you want for a bit less wedge?

Thanks for all the positive feedback. I'll give it a miss and continue to rely on the luck of the irish (and ACF50).

Glad to keep you lot amused:comfort :toungincheek

The chap asked about extending his warranty and I answered

All GS's have seal problems, irrespective of genre

However i was speaking as I see it, maybe subjectively

I had a 12GSA & wished that I'd liked it (because it was a great purchase deal) but didn't and that was only personal to me. If I'd have liked it, I could have sold all my other BMWs and now been sat on a wad of cash

I wasn't knocking for knocking's sake................I might buy a HP2 in the near future, BUT I wouldn't own a HP2 with no warranty cover.............IMHO

I took the warranty out and will continue to do so whilst I own the bike (which will be for some time). I do a big mileage so it`s peace of mind.

The bike is no less reliable than anything else I`ve owned (including my current 1100) but due to all the electronics etc make it more expensive to fix. It`s just the way it is these days.....

Maybe that`s what Johnny was trying to say:thumb

Right, so what's rubbish is not the very valid point he was making, but the fact that you and your cronies don't like him. Get ya.

Err................. no. Your just so wrong. :comfort

Johnny got rid of his R1200 GSA because of the way it handled. He prefers his 1150 - nothing wrong in that.:thumb2

Johnny has a history of bashing 1200s ............. because he likes to - and we love him for it. :thumb2

There are no cronies, as you put it, on this thread. :augie

That'll be shandy your drinking, living down the south. :D

No I am not.
Your (worthless) opinion is that I am wrong.
The bloke may well be a tit. I have no opinion on the matter.:nenau
But his thoughts of not owning a 1200 without a warranty is a very good one, and one I share.
If you had actually experienced the negative side of 1200GS ownership you would know full well that what what he said was perfectly valid.

The fact is people started having a go at him on this thread, not because of what he was saying but of who he is. Very childish. I guess I shouldn't expect any better, but I do.
Must be the shandy going to my head.

just what are "all the electronics etc make it more expensive to fix"?

is it the FPC @ £38 or the ring antenna @ slightly more? is there some other common electronic failure that doesn't get reported much here?

i'm pretty sure more people were reporting ABS faults on 1150s than are currently being reported on the far greater numbers of 1200s sold :nenau

most electrical faults i've read about here seem to come from shagged batteries, poorly fitted 3rd party accessories and OCD battery pampering.

rear drive boxes do present a worry i believe, as they cannot be effectively rebuilt. so, possible £700 + an hour putting it on in the shed.

i'm not so sure about an HP2 though. new forks every year seems a trifle excessive. bmw appear to have done nothing to rectify the problem.

FFS .................. what a knobber !!!! Steady on :comfort

You don't know me from Adam. :D

I've experience the negative side of GS failures more than once; I usually find it a good idea to refrain from commenting on things I know feck all about. :thumb

Here's just one example of the dark side - I know of many others (personally).

My point was that my 1100 can be fixed with a screwdriver and hammer (it has more than once:augie). The 1200 is different because of electonics, canbus, etc etc that modern vehicles need. I think it`s just as reliable (probably more so) but it`s mega bucks if it goes wrong although I don`t expect it to.

IMHO, it`s the same with any modern vehicle be it truck, car or bike so I`m definately not knocking the 1200 or BuMW.

Most problems are caused by overpampering, as you rightly point out, and lack of use:thumb
