I really like the GS and it continues to serve me well. But---- I am old and think that the new RS would serve me even better. They wont be here in Oz until mid year, so I'll just have to keep reading reviews. What I need to know is, will the knee bend be any tighter than the GS, because my old football knees refuse to tuck up close to my bum. The lower ride should decrease the drop risk and I do stuff all off road.
Any sympathy anywhere?

The ST? Or do you mean the upcoming R1200RS?

I would have thought it would be a slightly sportier riding position all round, compared to a GS

Seconded.
That's the main reason why, in spite of loving my old F800ST to bits, I had to part with it. On long trips, I was getting cramps in my quads and calves that I had never gotten on any of my previous bikes.

On a different tack, the suffixes 'ST' (Straße Touren, or 'Street Tourer') and 'RS' (Reise Sport, or 'Travel Sport') seem to be mutually interchangeable at BMW. The R1100RS and R1150RS (Oilhead), R1200ST (Hexhead) and new LC R1200RS are basically different representations of the same concept - filling the gap between a brain-out sportsbike (previously the R1200S, now the S1000RR) and a softish long-distance tourer (R1200RT).

Is it just me or does the R1200ST actually look rather cool these days?
I've had an RT. Does the ST pivot you forward more than the RT and in so doing take some weight off lower back?
Anybody got an ST on here?

It does. :) But not as cool as the R1200R which, by accident or design, looks uncannily like an MV Agusta Brutale.

I don't think it's been officially released yet. I haven't yet seen one in SA...
Anyone else?

It's one of the ugliest bikes ever made IMO and sits alongside Ducati's first crack at the MS in the proper fugly camp.

To the OP - I'm guessing that the RS will feature slight rear sets and as such will place more of a bend on your knees. RT or GS for comfort I'm afraid or maybe an R1200C. The new RS does look great though:thumb

In context of the discussion, I'm guessing he meant the RS, not the ST? Given that the ST is now the RS, there's still a bit of confusion.
I agree though - the Hexhead ST may well have been designed by someone as a practical joke, after hacking the servers at BMW's design bureau (and downing a bottle of Absinthe).

R1200C he be ded un bury. :(
A pity, IMHO.

Why not get the lowered GS fitted with a standard seat on the high position, this will allow your legs to drop thus opening your knee joints and still keep you on a relatively low bike that will still work properly for the 'off-road' stuff that you enjoy..Simples!

It look quite cramped in the leg room department compared to the GS.

I sat on the one they had at the NEC show, the whole bike feels slightly more compact (cramped!) than a GS and is effectively the same weight - on paper the weight difference accounts to the differing fuel capacity. As already mentioned your first choice should probably be to fit lowered suspension on the GS? Ground clearance is unlikely to be an issue.

The ST was ugly, but a great bike......

This new RS - looks cracking and is a bit closer to "Sporty" than "Touring"....

Me likeee! :D

So I have an RS on order (#2 at my local dealer), and my current GSW is just lovely. Having sat on the RS a few times at the different bike shows, I'm really struggling to see why I should continue with my order. What does the RS do that the GS doesn't? (Apart from looks)

Strange first post.......

You should cancel your order - you don't want the bike...............

I've been lurking a bit :). Too many forums nowadays! I actually ordered the RS before my MY15 GS arrived... So the GS has been keeping me happy (very happy), and it has questioned the validity of the RS.

I think the RS looks great (especially the new clocks), but it feels like a simple bike compared to the uber sophisticated GS.

RS

Ive had the pleasure of owing an ST, RT and GS's a plenty.

The ST was a hoot in my opinion and one of the best headlights of its era. a well underrated bike.I saw my old bike last year at Bahnstormer.

I think the RS won't fit everyone i sat on it at the NEC and did not like it compared to my GS LC, felt a long stretch to the bars and it looked average from the rear, not as nice as the GS?

Looks good value though.

I still think a bit of a perv on an RS would be ok. Might even sit on it. By what all of you are saying, I may not be able to put my feet up. Not getting a scooter, will stick to GS, then the car.
