Well I thought I'd go see what all the fuss is about and today I got to spend a couple of hours on the Benham demo bike. First thoughts looking round it is its kinda cool looking and still recognisable as a GS:thumb2 a quick run through on all the buttons and gizmo at first had me thinking "oh heck I wish I'd taked advanced electronics at school" but in reality it's all pretty user friendly. The first noticeable thing when riding it is its still a GS but with abit more poke, handles and steers like a GS should with little imput and generally goes where pointed. So far so good:thumb2 as I settled in a few things started to niggle me, the fuel injection makes a right old ticking noise and as an airhead owner I couldn't ignore it as it was like the tappets needed adjusting:blast then at 3k in top gear there's a thrumming resonance that just drove me nuts.
Anyway out on the open road and we let the girl lift her skirt and show me what she's got and yep I can agree with the current owners she's fairly quick:thumb2 but this then highlighted a few other issues I didn't much care for. The first being the fly by wire throttle, man does it feel disconnected, I could really feel the disconnection between what my brain was telling my hand to do and what the bike was giving me in return. I tried different modes but even in dynamic I could feel the FBW having its say. Now I'm not saying it'll be the same for everyone but for me I need to feel I'm pulling that throttle open even a fraction and unfortunately with this FBW system I didn't. My next gripe is regards the traction control, as I came out of a bit of a flick flack round about I gave her some fist, all well at first as she stinks out of the corner but as the front wheel left the ground by no more than an inch the engine was cut by the traction control. This could be quite dangerous I feel because if your still cranked over a little bit this sudden chop could push the front of the bike from under you. Now ok you might say "well you shouldn't ride a GS like that" but hey I was out to explore what it would do. The other issue I didn't like was the elastic feeling the chassis has when gassing it on bumpy choppy Tarmac, the traction control holds the engine back then suddenly let's you have it so I feels like the bike stretches then boings back into shape, very strange sensation. The last thing I would say is try as I might I could not find a suspension set up in the ESA that I liked. In soft round town it was ok but in sport mode on fast roads it felt poorlydamped and choppy.
So all in all, it was interesting but would I rush out to buy one. NO. I still thing my 1200adv was a far better bike and without all the electronic gubbins to mess things up. Technology's great but sometimes it's just a step too far and that's how I feel about the GSwc. But for all you guy who do own them enjoy:thumb

2 hours.... there's you problem, you hardly got to know the new girl :blast

....as I came out of a bit of a flick flack round about I gave her some fist, all well at first as she stinks out of the corner but as the front wheel left the ground by no more than an inch the engine was cut by the traction control....
When riding it like you stole it, rule number 1 turn off the traction control.... only then you will see what she can do :thumb

....The other issue I didn't like was the elastic feeling the chassis has when gassing it on bumpy choppy Tarmac....
Enduro mode is your friend here :)

You were obviously out just to thrash the bollocks off it, and as Paul said, 2 hours is hardly enough time. There are folk on this site (both 11xx and 1200 owners) who have said that it takes days if not weeks to actually gel with a GS.:rob

Maybe so

But on my first encounter I don't think I'd rush out to buy one just yet. I really didn't like the fly by wire throttle and no amount of time would change that. Yes I could live with it but I'd never like it.
I'm now thinking about another 12adv:rolleyes:

No your very wrong

I went out wanting to give it a fair crack of the whip in different situations. So did some town n traffic, did fast open roads, fast twisty bumpy stuff and slow gravel and pot holed lanes. I really wanted to like it and in fairness there were bits I did like but the bits I didn't like would stop me owning one. The one nagging thing that sits at he back of my mind is your always going to be paying for extended warranty unless you change it every three years. All the electronics are at some point will need fixing and having spent a good portion of my life in the automotive game I know that electronics cost big time when they go wrong. And before you go, it's a BMW bla bla. They all go wrong and clever electronics on a bike have a much harder life than those in cars.

Fair enough.:thumb But two hours definitely isn't enough time.:rob Re the electronics, I'm sure you are right. I've no issue buying an extended warranty for it, but will probably have changed the bike within 2 years.:blagblah:D

Definitely not the bike for you. Have you considered the Honda Crosstourer?

Fair points on the FBW. On my S1000 I found it quite disconcerting at first (especially rain mode) equally the abrupt intervention of TC.
But got used to the 'feel' , found the throttle mode that worked for me and disabled TC when I felt like it.
On my WC test ride I found the settings I liked so happily bought a TE package.

However if I didn't have to wait even longer than I am now I'd have taken a non electronic version....

But if I want non electronic intervention I jump on the HP2 Sport :)

Anyway us beta testers will sort out any teething issues before you end up on the Adventure / RT, so don't be too harsh on some of the fucking stupid questions that get asked.

Good god

NO....... 1200adv without ESA or 990adv. Really any bike with a wire between the throttle hand and the engine will do. Two days ago I rode a 990sm ktm, no electronics just the old hand to engine connection. It was mental :D not a bike I would want to own but a few years ago I'd have ripped yer arm off for it. The level of control you have over the engine and rear tyre was perfect. Within 10 minutes I was backing it into roundabouts and leaving black lines on the way out. I like to feel I have control not that I'm talking to a black box. The new GS just isn't for me, simple as. I don't dislike it, I just wouldn't want one. Maybe I'm a ludite when it comes to electronic driver aids. I've had lots of fast cars in my time from bmw's to Evo's and I've been lucky enough to drive some very expensive super cars, to date my fave car of all time was my slightly breathed on TVR Tuscan with 440 bhp and zero driver aids ( not even ABS) and the worst was the new McLaren mp14 because the electronics just tied themselves in knots on fast bumpy roads.

Now yer talking

The HP2 really does it for me:drool very sexy but abit to impracticle:nenau

I wonder if there is a mobility forum that has similar conversations regarding invalid carriages and electric buggy things:D
I know my mother is a fucking menace in the ones you hire in shopping centres!!!

Im a really old fashioned f*cker as well. Had 5 Honda VFRs ,one after the other ,loved them to death and then they introduced the VTEC. I just didnt fancy one and have never ridden one nor will I . But its my choice and I started down the GS route. Now on my third, done about 70 k miles and never had a problem BUT I just dont fancy the new one. Had my fair share of electrical problems with cars over the past few years, 3 different cars with fly by wire throttle problems would you believe. I too prefer an old fashioned throttle and agree the problems down the road will probably be more electrical than mechanical. However I accept I am probably in the minority and wish all you wc owners the best of luck.
Now start the abuse!!

ok .. ok ...

So food for thought ...

My kids are on a feckin computer or a smart phone all day. They never go out and play football, (well they are both girls..) go on bike rides, go for a run etc etc.

So they often hear me chuntering about 'when I was a kid' and generally banging on about what a good fun child hood i had 'cos I was out and about and doing 'stuff'.

But ... I secretly know, that if they aren't computer wizzards, if they don't play wacky play station games and type with all ten fingers, then they'll probably get left behind.

At work, I am a bit of a dinosaur. Technology is taking over and I'm constantly asking my younger colleagues how to do some fancy fandangled computer thing or some complicated (to me) data check.
I know, that I need to keep up with the techno-revolution and keep pluging away at complicated learning packages. If I don't - I'll get left behind.

So I say, yeah - some of the old times were good. I'd always have room in my garage for Wrefords R100 airhead, but the reality is, that if you don't embrace change and roll with new technology, yer going to end up one of those stuck in a generation pipe and slippers brigade.
Be wary of slowly turning into one of those stick in the muds! keep current! test ride new stuff, and just cos it's got a radiator or a feckin FBW throttle don't run away from it !!

:D

Spot on Giles and evolution is the order of the day! I'm guessing most of the people who don't like the new electrickery happily drive cars with more computor power than Apollo 13 and go on holiday in a Boeing or Airbus which fly themselves:augie
