I've had a number of GS since 2000, bit my new 1250 runs the hottest. The outside temperature can be, say, 18 degrees C, I'm riding at 70mph, the guage goes to 93 degrees then reasonably quickly will drop to 82 before reasonably quickly climbing back to 93. It does it all the time and never stops.

What are others experiencing?

Mine is the same, I think its an idiosyncrasy of the thermostat, it unnerved me a bit at first, bikes I've had in the past tend to be at a static temperature at speed.

All vehicles do it but you never see it unless it has a digital temp readout. If you look at the raw data via OBD you can see it but when there is an analogue needle or block type gauge they engineer a deadband (hysteresis) in the middle so all looks good unless it actually has a problem.

The old hexheads went well into triple figures but they had an analogue gauge so nobody knew how hot they got.

My old one sat at 82 all the time, but I have seen the new one do it... eventualy settles at 82 ish after about 50 miles?

Took a close look at my bike at weekend and temp was up and down like a hooers drawers. 82-93 was the range and up and down in seconds and not particularly related to engine load AFAIC see.

Situation - inconsistent engine temperature.
When I bought my (new to me) 2018 R1200 GS TE in May 2019 it had a total of 1,400 miles on clock. Despite the ambient temperature, riding conditions, engine load and speed the temperature gauge repeatedly moved between the range of 82 to 96. When it reached 96 it would then rapidly drop down to 82 then slowly climb to 96 and repeat the sequence.

Investigation.
When I went touring from May 26th to June 10th 2019 I rode in Spain, France, Switzerland and Belgium; the ambient temperature ranged between 9 to 35 degrees centigrade. Again the engine temperature gauge repeatedly moved in the same sequence; again irrespective of how it was ridden nor the engine load.

Resolution.
I've booked the ferries for another tour of Spain & Portugal in Sep' & Oct' 2019 and three weeks ago I fitted some more expensive Farkles, including some (inexpensive £35.00) O.E.M. BMW radiator guards. It may be a coincidence, however after fitting the rad' guards, the temperature gauge NOW consistently displays 82 (however, it sometimes VERY momentarily displays 83 then immediately drops down to 82); this is irrespective of how it was ridden nor the ambient temperature.

Root Cause.
The bike is like a lady and was not happy until adorned with yet further additional expensive Farkles.

Funny that, my lady does it even with her OEM rad farkles.:blast:D

Just returned from North Spain and Portugal. Several 1250's on the trip. We had a 42c day and mid 35c days. No problems.
