1250 GS rear footrest hangers

Hi all,

Jeezus I'm not having a lot of luck with this bike.....

So I got a set of Heavy Duties panniers to fit to my GS and it seems the pillion footrest bolts are seized in the frame as they won't budge at all. Completely ridiculous for an eighteen month old bike that I've never ridden in the winter.

Tried all sorts of release agents including Plusgas which will usually shift anything.

To make matters worse I've had a Torx thing snap and chew one of the bolt heads up.

Anyone got any ideas on how to get the offended bolts out?

Could try heat. Don’t know if they have thread lock on them if they do heat will help.
 
Heat gun to soften the BMW loctite and job would have gone to plan, they are tight and need a quality torx bit and plenty of heat and it's a doddle, just taken mine off btw

Interesting, the two I could get out there seemed to be no locking compound on what so ever, the Torx bit was a Britool item so good quality BTW.

So I'll ask the question again, does anyone have any ideas or know of a tool that can get a chewed up Torx bolt out?

I don't want to know how easy yours came out or how I should of done it in the first place, just how to get a chewed up Torx bolt out of a footrest hanger....

Na not touchy, just straight to the point Mate, this Princess doesn't have time for could of, would of and should of.

I didn't ask what I should have done, didn't need to know yours had come out easy, I did ask if anyone had any ideas as to how to get a chewed up Torx bolt out.

It's my bad, chewing the bolt up and just need to deal with it.

I hope your bolts always come out easy and that you never have issues at all, ever.

If it was me i think i would use a slightly bigger drill than the bolt to get just the head off.
Then the footpeg bracket would come away.
You then have a bit thread left to hold with mole grips ?

Just a thought...
 
You’re going to need a screw extractor set, get a decent one as if you’ve already broken a decent torx bit then it’s going to take some effort. A bit of gentle heat from a small blowtorch (Dremel do a nice one) will help.

Plenty of heat. Hot air gun preferable-- less likelihood of damaging the frame paint. Take the seats off first to prevent damaging the vinyl.
You might struggle to hammer another Torx bit into the head so the other alternative is to grind flats onto the edges and use a normal AF spanner. Should be able to get enought torque on it if you heat it up enought first.
 
Not meen to be bad here, are you turning correct way, counter clock is tight, and clock is loose, see video below. 2m.14

He undid the footpeg bolts the standard way not left hand thread....
 
I removed my pillion pegs/mounts just to tide the bike up on day 2 of ownership & I did think the bolts were tighter that i would have expected to undo. As said above they had threadlock on them, but you know that now & the drive height is shallow.

Try the next size up Torx or an allen drive & I suggest with a tack hammer carefully knock the proud bolt material back down to help you drive the bolt and drive the slightly oversized tool into the head.

If you ever round a crosshead, use a tack hammer to knock it smooth and try again.
