I’ve just sold my bike and am looking for a change. I want something reliable, fairly economical, well made and capable of touring long distance in comfort. Also, it must have good lights because there’s dark unlit country lanes near where I live.

I’ve been told to have a look at a 1250GSA as it would do all I require + much more. I’d be looking at a used one probably 2019 model so there’s still some warranty left.

Can anyone please give me some pointers on things to check or things which can go wrong with these bikes. The issues/failures I’ve heard about so far are dynamic suspension unit, dash TFT panel, headlight, switchgear and water pumps, also dodgy batteries in some bikes. Are these issues extreme/rare cases or are problems common? Would I be advised to buy from a dealer and get an extended warranty?

Thanks in advance..

I have a 2019 GS. No problems, however it has done only 2500 miles.

2019 GSA . 8500 miles. Only one issue which was a flat battery totally my fault. Bought for European touring with the G/F and does the job.

Buy and do not worry, fit Denali for extra lights, and be happy, bikes are mostly ok, some have problems, but all bikes do also.

That’s a good summary. I would add that they are complex and expensive machines and I would go for an extended warranty for those reasons.

I have a 2021 with approx 2000 miles. Agree re: the Denali and recommend you book an early slot to have them fitted with an expert.

Make sure the PDI is done as the TFT update is important for connectivity.

I note you were looking at a second hand bike, I was too but the price of a new bike with full warranty and bundling of extras turned out cheaper.

I would not use the same dealer again, make sure you use a good trusted and recommended dealer.

GS bought new May 2020. just turned 11000 miles, no issues at all
Can't see the A being any different

Thanks everyone.. I’m planning on visiting either Manchester or Preston dealership to see what they’ve got available.

My 2019 has turned 8000 miles. Issues I have had:
Battery gave up the ghost. Known fault. On way to service and had to call them to me for a jump start. Battery changed. No further issues.
I have corrosion just started showing between cylinder head and the engine block. Pointed out at service. BMW agreed warranty repair no hassle due to good overall condition.
Mine has suffered gravel rash to screen and the front silver cheeks. Couple of marks on the beak. You may want to thoroughly examine these areas. Its a used bike so there will be some marks. Its what you are happy with.
Other than that its been a great bike.

2019 GS; 10k miles.... NO issues so far. (fingers crossed)

Buy a 2019 GS or GSA, and enjoy.
