I havent had an issue with the GS but I have oned numerous Triumph speed triples and they had varying degrees of oil usage ranging from non to a litre every couple of thousand miles.

Thats way too much I'd of thought. Both my 1200's never used oil at all in comparison. maybe 3-4mm between 6K services. At that rate your valves or rings will be sludged up to hell.
I took my 5 ltr V8 in bits and fixed it as it was using 1 ltr every 2K. No way a modern engine should be burning it that fast !
How did you run it in.. lots of revs at all RPM's, push the rings out and get them bedded in. If you give it a bit of a hard time now for 1000 miles it should make it better

Neither my 1250 or 1200 GS LC’s needed their oil topping up between services.
My 2009 GS MU and 2012 RT TC used a litre every 3000 and 2000 miles respectively.
ISTR the owners manuals states excessive oil consumption at more than one litre per 1000 miles.

Have done 5500 miles and used approx 500ml. Dealer says no cause for concern. He advised industry minimum standard is 1 litre per 1000 miles. I had heard this on the Ducati owners web site, when I had a Multistrada. My Aprilia RSVR liked a drop of oil. So my GS is looking good re consumption.
Just to add my recent experience to the thread.
I’ve a 21 1250 GS which I now have 10300 miles on.
First noticed oil was near min at around 4k after first 600 mile service.
Other day was near min again again no at 10300, was serviced at 6700.
Spoke to dealer who said it’s quite normal.
What I will add though is I didn’t properly check where the level was immediately after the service.

Mine is 2021GS with 10000 miles on it. Never used a drop of oil. Level is always in the middle.
12500 miles on mine and not a drop used, from -8 to +40 degrees, she just doesn’t use any oil.
That’s bollocks!
Too gentle running in can lead to Glazed bores like you say; long motorway rides at a steady throttle or even cruise control on for a long period wont help the running in.
Thats rubbish if BMW put that on there sales adverts no one would buy one
I have had four LC bikes and put 80,000 plus on the first one and never topped any of them up, my last two was from Williams as well, i would tell them they can have it back
BMW's specified tolerances for a 1250 to consume over a litre of oil every 1500-2000 miles, ok then thats a 500cc bottle of oil every 1,000 miles or every four tank top ups, so you budget on a extra £7.50 every refill don't listen to them
Burning that amount of oil should surely make the bike fall outside the requirements for Euro5 emissions.

I was under the impression that the LC bikes as a rule don’t use any oil
I know mine doesn’t, I do run my bikes in, even though it’s questionable as to whether it’s still necessary

Engines previously were build with much greater tolerances and needed bedding in..
Oils previously were mineral and semisynthetic
Nowadays tolerances are so small and due to the use of advanced synthetic oil there shouldn’t be any oil consumption at all…
Or at least very little..
Look at car engines…. No real running instructions given anymore….
Sure there are variations between same engines but your amount of oil consumption is not acceptable..

Years ago 1150's had a reputation for using oil when new then sealing up at 20k miles.Wollaston BMW stated that too many weren't ridden hard enough to seal them up and mine seemed to stop using oil after a couple of track days.
