1250RS Handguards

I had a R1150GS and now own a 2016 lupin blue R1200RS, bought new

1. It's not a GS or GSA
2. I can flat foot both sides with standard seat
3. Conventional forks give better feedback
4. Sensible wheel size
5. a bit lighter
6. more aerodynamic at autobahn cruising speed

So what’s the general consensus of opinion on going from the GSA to the R/S? Screen, sat nav mount and hand guards seem to be my initial points to cover off? I’m seriously thinking of changing and can get a good deal at the moment on a new one using the finance offer which i would pay off after 3 months. I don't carry a pillion now.
Plus points: same power, slightly higher gearing. Not a huge difference in weight, but it's lower down. Easy to 'flat-foot' - I was starting to find the GS a bit of a struggle. Screen is no problem to me but there are only 2 settings - up or down. I have moved my sat-nav mount.
Not so plus points - it needs more weather proofing. Some of that is due to the skimpy rear mudguard coupled to a 180 back tyre.
After the GS, you need to recalibrate onto the 17" front & telly forks. 33% reduction in pannier size (if you have GSA panniers).
Mirrors don't give as good a view as the GS.
I had the same concerns swopping my GS, but now I'm getting use to the RS I really like it. Get a test ride.
I'm sure other people will be along with their views shortly.

Have you had a test ride? You'll need to see if you like the riding position on the RS and what bars/seat option might work for you if you do. The standard screen is rubbish IMO, so you'd need to fit an after market one if it doesn't work for you. I have fitted this Puig which is a big improvement even in the lowest position with the screen on the lowest mounting points

There's the MRA Vario too and you can also get a seperate spoiler to go on top of a screen of your choice.

There's a couple of options for repostioning the satnav

As an alternative to handguards you could consider heated gloves.

I went from a 1200GSA (via an RSVR Mille!) to a 1200RS. I found the lower seat height allows flat footing but it has less leg room than the GSA. It has better feedback through front (as per wessie's comments) and it feels far more grunty, possibly due to the lower mass. It's has some serious mid range poke. Longest I've spent in the saddle without a break was about three hours and I've covered 100's of miles in a day on many rides. It seems sensitive to tyre choice and pressures. With the profile and compounds of the Metzler Sportec 01SE's which mine was fitted with, the front develops slight ridges causing it to start tipping in unexpectedly once you have 3K miles or more on them, which is controlled to some extent by ensuring tyre pressures on the front don't dip much under 36psi. They don't inspire confidence in the wet when this happens. The rear is great and long lasting. Others have reported similar with these tyres and with Dunlop Roadsmarts, whilst some others have not reported similar issues with other tyre brands/models.

Suspension settings were improved in 2019 with the 1250s but the 1200 can be a little too under-sprung and choppy on the Road setting, so mine is largely left in Dynamic settings for ESA and engine mode, or Road settings when greasy (on engine mode). Handling on twistier A roads I think betters the GSA. They just feel solidly and safely planted and pretty unflappable so they do inspire more confidence when getting a lick on. I guess it's down to the rake and trail plus front suspension set up.

Pillion space is not enough, especially with a top box with back rest fitted. They're a better solo machine.

Standard screen is useless. I tried a Wunderlich Marathon but it lacks enough air flow and was still causing turbulence in the low setting. I changed that for an MRA Vario touring screen which is much better for my height anyway.

I also tried various seats including the Wunderlich Aktiv comfort but reverted to the standard sport seat which retains a little more leg room and I can settle comfortably on for extended rides.

The biggest improvement for comfort was fitting the Helibar risers which lift and pull back the bars enough to be comfortable and these work fine with the sport seat.

Satnav re-mounting to a position over the instruments is a must. Other than that and the usual necessary extras like a crud catcher and mudsling plus frame bungs, it's standard.

I'd say it makes for a better all round road bike as it's more of a sports tourer but then again, the RT is no slouch in that department. If I was doing more touring, the RT would be my weapon of choice, no question. For an all rounder, the RS is a great choice. I find myself putting up more miles on the RS and looking for more excuses to ride it than I did with the GSA which, although hugely competent and comfortable, just felt a little dull to ride by comparison. It just wasn't as engaging as the RS seems to be.

Economy-wise, I'm averaging around 50mpg so broadly similar to the GSA and tank range is more than adequate. Quality of build I think is very good, it's definitely a premium product let down only by the engine casing paint finish on the underside and the switch gear which isn't anything like the quality of the (backlit) switches on my old Tiger 1200. BMW customer service has been top notch but I guess it depends who you use. I've always found Cotswold Motorrad to be a great bunch to deal with and always very helpful.

I ran a GS for 6 years till 2013. Was ok.

Short term with lovely R1200 Anniversary - too low/cramped.

Moved to an RS12 when it launched in 2015.

Love it. Still. I’m biased.

Fits like a glove. All day comfortable.

Mirrors are perfect.

Standard bars are perfect.

Cut down standard screen is perfect.

46L GIVI box is perfect.

Metzeler 01SE tyres are perfect - Road, track, Autobhan.

Highest seat with a Cool Cover is comfy. It’s perfect.

HID headlamps are perfect.

Original GPS mount is perfect (with small jack up legs)

Lowered MV pegs give me more leg stretch. Not quite perfect (wider).

Custom suspension lets it ride better.

Fuel consumption is around 20% better than the GS was. Tank range 220 easy.

Acquired Barkbusters but decided not to fit them - get along fine without them.

An RS might suit you. It might not. We’re all different shapes and sizes with a different bias.

Go try one.

ps - I’ll be back on here tomorrow to report on my 45K valve service :)

Ordered my R1250RS today and should collect next week. 👍 now on the look out for a suitable top box, not too large but needs to take at least a helmet and lock etc. Givi or similar larger tinted screen, crash bars or head covers and maybe hand guards.

Nice one, I'm sure you'll like it. I fitted x heads rather than crash bars. I had crash bars on my 1200GS and they were a bit of a pain to fit and when cleaning the bike so when I got my 1250GS I went for the x heads instead which are easier to fit and cheaper than the crash bars though just be careful when fitting them that you do all the bolts up with your fingers first to locate them before putting a torx wrench on them as one in particular is on an angle so would be easy to cross thread. IMO crash bars don't suit the RS but each to their own

Givi and Shad are the most popular non BMW brands for a topbox. I have the Givi Monokey plate and use an E45 box. Just be aware that the Givi box is not great if you have a pillion as it sits a bit further forward than the BMW box.

I fitted a 46L GIVI Trekker in place of OEM box and wish I'd done it sooner.

Adaptor plate easy to find and fit.

Thanks very much for the offer Carlos. It may benefit the others in the "RS gang" if you posted them here. After putting a few more miles on my new RS, I'm beginning to think that I can get away without them. I've been on various GS's for the past 25 years and initially felt a bit 'naked' without guards, but I am much more relaxed about it now. I'm not a winter rider. On the GS I could get away with Rallye gloves all the time, but at the moment I'm not noticing the difference. And, as littleade said, the RS is a very nice bike, I just need to get back to riding on a 17" front and telly forks.

Screen- you’ll notice a difference compared to the GSA. I have a Puig touring screen on mine which helps. 60 mph with visor up is okay for short periods but on the whole I find it slightly noisier than my GS with touring screen which was okay at motorway speeds with the visor up.
Bike has the standard seat. I’m 5’11”.

Sat Nav mount- mine has the Wunderlich mount fitted. It puts the Nav in the perfect place but I find it vibrates and bounces about quite a lot on bumpy roads, not helped by the firmer suspension of the RS.
I did have the BMW nav prep cradle (the lockable one) which would slip down/around the mounting bar due to the weight. I’ve swapped it for the bog standard mount that doesn’t lock and this seems to have stopped the movement around the mounting bar but hasn’t stopped the bouncing as this is a Wunderlich mount issue. The cockpit on the RS is smaller than the GS and I find the smaller mount looks tidier and more suited to the space available.

I have Voight bar risers fitted and have no problems with clearance when the bars are on full lock. The lockable Nav mount needs careful placement but it will fit.

No handguards on mine. The 3 stage heated grips are very good. It was 9 degrees here yesterday and I had no problems with cold hands in summer gloves , with the heated grips on. BMW double chamber gloves get used if it’s particularly cold.

Just need to find a cure for the filthy dirty rear end when it rains now..

Same applies to some of the Shad top boxes. My SH47 sits slightly too forward with the pillion backrest than ideal, making the pillion space a little more cramped. If you don't take a pillion, it's no bother.
