1290 GT slays XR and Multi !

i had to go to Trevor Pope's a few weeks back - looks like a proper old school bike dealer, except they all wore TP polo shirts not brown store coats. no experience of their service really though.

got mine from Crescent which is an industrial unit. service is good, but not quite BMW.

About this time last year I decided that I'd had enough of the reliability issues with my 2012 Multistrada so started looking for something as a replacement. At that point I knew the 1290 GT was going to be released this year because I'd been to Kiska in Austria and sat on it Easter last year, I had 2 test rides on an S1000 S and I'd sat on an XR at the bike show so I knew roughly what I'd be getting with that bike but neither would be available in time for my summer trip to Germany so what to do? Easy, I had a test ride on an 1190 Adventure S and instantly liked it so I struck a deal on a brand new 2014 model and that was that.

I'm pretty well convinced that at some point I'll be buying a 1290 GT either next spring or (more likely) the following one because I loved the engine on the SD version and no way will I ever buy another Multistrada though the S1000 engine makes anything with it fitted guaranteed to make me laugh.

The downside of my impetuous purchase of the 1190 was that shortly after buying it I had a lot of problems with my shoulder and hardly rode a bike last summer so I could have kept the unreliable Multistrada another year and probably got one of the first GTs in the country :banghead:

I guess Nutty is mixing up substance over style.
Virtually all BMW bike dealers I've been to have a flashy showroom but are staffed by arrogant latte-drinking twats with the latest designer beard who are normally too busy on Fucksapp to even look up and ask if they can help-admittedly I'm normally with a GS clone monkey as I have no actual wish to purchase anything with a BMW roundel on it.

On the other hand , the few KTM dealers I've been to in the UK never have flashy showrooms but are far more pleasant and actually see you walk in,which is much easier when you don't have your head up your anally-bleached arse !!!

Places like Premier Bikes and The KTM Centre in Hemel are very friendly.Obviously P and H in Crawley don't count as they are all utter cnuts and must be a finishing school before salesmen move on to BMW Motorbad !!!

I went the opposite way from an 1190 to a MTS , had a few issues but I also had a lot of issues with the KTM.
Don't think they are a comparable bike really , the MTS is much better through the twisties than the KTM was.
I will swap the ducati before the years out , but probably for a superduke

Funny isn't it what people like and don't like 'cos to me the Ducati is beautiful, the KTM right up there there with it, (maybe just behind) and the WMB whilst nice enough is just a Euro styled UJM.

For some of us the fact that a lot of KTM dealers are old skool family run businesses and provide hand written invoices ;) is all part of the deal, in a good way :)

KTM must be doing something right though, who is Europe's biggest motorcycle manufacturer?

Andres

I don't care if they write their invoices on toilet paper, but the nearest dealer to me is over an hour away. I'm too far for the dealer to just spin round in the van when the bike breaks down. A two hour round trip for every trip to the dealer is a bit much. My point is that they are charging BMW money for their bikes, so need to open more dealers.

The MTS is a better bike than the 1190 every way you look at it but mine just did my head in completely with its unreliability and the final straw was being told by the dealer that ragging it would clear the emulsion from the oil shortly after it had new cylinder heads fitted when they leaked coolant into the exhaust ports and wrecked the cat.

Let's be honest Nutty you will never buy anything other than bmw. It's is excuse after excuse why you won't. They don't have led light, they don't have a dealer in my back garden, they don't......... In reality you just won't buy one and thats it!

When KTM produce a better bike, for me, then I'd get one.;)

My XR didn't have an LED headlight last time I looked.

I've had a few Yamahas and Triumphs before BMWs.

No you wouldn't look back in your posts for all the lame excuses.

The LED headlight was the specific reason you couldn't possibly get a 1290 SA

No it wasn't. It was ONE of the reasons why I wouldn't get one.

Why are you getting so worked up?:nenau

for all the hyperbole and emotions, all three of these great bikes are missing the one feature that I prefer, shaft drive.

If the 175 BHP K1300S can have one, why not these bikes that are hybrid adventure/tourers.

I didn't test the GT, but I did the DVT, XR, GSA & SA, the shaft driven GSA was what I went with.

The GT looks like a great bike, and I wouldn't rule one out one day. But, and it's a big but, if KTM are going to go head to head with BMW, charging BMW money, they really need to invest some serious money into their dealer network.

Spot on. I've been tempted to swap my LC for an 1190 but left utterly underwhelmed by the local dealer with the next closest over 60 miles away.

Yeah...and??!!! Eva Herzigová would most likely out-fuck me too but it would be jolly good fun having a damn good go! :augie
And???

I was pointing out that from a performance point of view it is immaterial, all will happily outperform most riders. The decision which one to buy is then down to looks, character, brand, colour or whatever, but anyone that chooses one over another based on its performance superiority is fooling themselves that they are much better than that actually are. That are all super fast, quick handling mega machines. For me the looks would away it, that's all.

I have always found BM dealers to be very helpful and friendly and KTM dealers to be the most unhelpful arrogant bunch of fecktards in the motorcycle industry. They were better when I owned a KTM, but we're awful when I had the Husaberg and seemed to have no interest in putting me on a KTM road bike. KTM are a bit like Ducati in that they only seem to treat you well if you already subscribe to the brand. I mostly and up in dealers when at work and suited and booted. Maybe they don't think I'm was real 'biker'?

I'm not disagreeing with your analogy or excusing dealers behaviour but maybe they have seen one too many tyre kickers in suits. At least if you turn up in bike gear they know the person is not a complete waste of their time.

I didn't buy a bike from our nearest Ducati dealer and ended up buying two from another one because the local ones salesman is an ignorant knob (IMO). The second has outstanding service as does my local BMW and the nearest KTM dealer. It's luck of the draw.

.
people in suits often have a lot of money to spend..... Simplistic and not always true I know, plenty of rich people don't wear one ! but perhaps something they might consider when faced with a potential customer enters wearing one.
