1290 SA S review

It's not just passenger comfort I need it too,I also have a 2012 ZZR 1400 which I have owned since new but after a few years I could only do 150 miles or so before everything started to ache ,age creeping up on me I guess.I had intended to px it for a XR in Sept 2015 but it wasn't for me so I ended up buying a new GS and keeping the ZZR ,thing is it hardly gets used now.

I want something like the GS but with more grunt I'm hoping the KTM will be the one.It still good to go out on the ZZR now and again though to remind me what acceleration feels like.

Wife's not interested in riding it has been mentioned !

Goldwing ,now there's a thought.

Hopefully BMW are aware that the GS is being left behind in the BHP department and deal with it on new version. If others can get 160 BHP from a 1200 twin, there's no reason for BMW not to.

For those that don't want 160BHP they can leave it in rain mode

It should fit the bill, a lot more power (without a shaft drive to sap even more) and a fair bit less weight, the new 1290's have a shade more top end and a fair bit more low down so should be even better suited to touring.

They don't have that relentless shove above 100mph of ZZR, but are about the same 0-60 and only a smidge behind up to 100, then the extra 40bhp and slippery bodywork of the ZZR will see it pulling away with ease.

When being driven around in the mid range the twin cylinder torque and the bikes lower gearing mean it is very nippy, possibly matching (maybe beating) the ZZR in a top gear roll on from 60mph. The LC GS has a slight advantage below 4,000rpm over my old 1190, but after that the KTM overtakes and pull away with ease - and an extra 1500 rpm of screaming top end over the GS.

I would take the KTM over the ZZR for making fast progress on twisty back roads / Alpine passes solo or two-up, as well as for mile munching across Europe, the only other bike that might be of interest is the Ducati MTS.

See if you can get a long test ride on the KTM, resist the temptation to rag it to see how it goes when the Mrs is on the back, I can assure you it will be quick enough, so try and win the Mrs over with smooth riding instead - and try and get the dealer to throw on some Ergo seats - although the new models might be better than the old ones for comfort - but I doubt it, if they make it too comfy nobody will buy the Ergo Seats.

Knocked this up in the "build your own" section of the website.

It's official, I'm in love.

Did the same but with orange crash bars, looks awesome !

Wheels the wrong size.

I'm sure you can spec on the wire wheels from the "T" but they will probably be horrendously expensive. Tried to check this today but after spending 20 mins twiddling my thumbs and being ignored in the local KTM dealership....... I gave up and left.

Could you not have sidled up to one of the staff and discretely said "excuse me, when you have a minute, could I have a word please". Works for me. Saves a wasted journey and 20 minutes of your time.

One guy was with a customer and the other left his desk while I was looking at the stock...... It was more of an experiment really as there customer service is a bit of a talking point over here in the emerald aisle at the moment.

There was also some sort of a meeting going on in an office but I was clearly visible through the big glass window.

I probably wouldn't buy a litre of oil from them, let alone a 20 grand bike.

Must be a feature of KTM dealers. Happened to me the first time I ventured in one, but i relented and went back. A friend experienced the same thing at the same dealer and they lost a probable sale.

Same here, but I've found a good one now.:beerjug:
