Ok - thoughts

If you could choose between the 1290 SA or 1190R both at the same price, both new.....

Which way would you go?:D

1190R , the 1290 is (for me) a bit cramped . The 1190 has more room for us Giants and is lighter easier to chuck about and more off road potential if you really think you want it

I'd compare the 1290SA more with a turbo'd GSA:D:beer:

Giles and Andres have already committed to the 1190R over the 1290 and that other chap on here bought one before going back to the 1050.....

so, it looks like the 1190R is favoured from the cognoscenti!

Remember that the 1190 R has less leg room (distance between pegs and seat) than the standard 1190S with the seat in the high position.

The R seat was made to be lower to compensate for the longer suspension. So factor in the cost of a different seat.

Depends what type of use you want to put it to - I prefer the looks of the R but prefer the better 2 up and touring abilities of the 1290. Plus the engine is positively nuclear

I don't ride off road - apart from the odd dusty track in Spain/Portugal... I like to tour but always solo, I like going fast....it needs to be suitable to take me to Spain in a day, get a bacon sarnie on a Sunday morning and the odd 60 minute blast of an evening!

I don't commute, its a toy ...

the inevitable, and far from unexpected, slinking away from the *sensible* option has begun then? :D

i had the choice and went with the R. the fact that it was considerably cheaper than the SA was a nice bonus. well, made up a little bit for the money i lost on the S i traded in.

leg room - the S seat, both stock and PP fit the R.

i would quite like the "Nuclear" 1290 motor, but it seems a bit greedy.

it does everything you say you want :)

Sounds like you need to get some serious test riding done ;)

Easy to get test rides on the 1190S and 1290 SA but there never seams to be any R's around as demo bikes!

I've had a good go on Andres 1190R - probably need a go on the 1290...

I've been very impressed with the 1050, quality, handling, brakes etc.... but....... and I think we all know the answer........ I fancy the bigger one....

but I also fancy that 1290 motor....... I know Melch's is a different state of tune but feck me.... when I opened the taps on it in France......... crikey....

I'd go for the 1290 then just to spite the pair of them :D

hang on 'til later in the year and see if they put the 1290 in the NotsoSuper Adventures. buy one and trump everybody :)

My mate has a 1290 SD and the the SA has an initial torque which even surpasses that - his extra top end only comes in handy when you're well into triple digit speeds (apparently).

I had a 1050 loaner which was a fun bike - if you find you miss that output just put the 1290 in to Rain mode and hey presto :D

It will be a winter 2017 purchase....... so I can wait to see what's happening there.... but there will be a premium to pay for bragging rights...

they are doing deals on 2016 SA' though - but all the guys I've spoken to are list price on the R - Trevor Pope has one 2015 1190S left.... at 11k ish

But I want the R or the SA...... as you say the R with the 1290 motor would do nicely!

I'm actually really happy with the 1050, and it TBH is plenty fast enough.... it spins up to 120+ ( On a trackday of course) plenty quick enough......but now I'm in it's like an Arms race................ i'm hooked.....

Need to move house first - promised SWIMBO..... this is part of the deal! - either a big boys KTM or a newer HD - thing is i'm quite attached to the old snotter so it makes sense to have a BB KTM and the Old Snotter for fiddling around with.... I've been put off New Harleys TBH......more of which in the "beat Twiz up thread" later...
