Ok so as I have said i am looking at getting the all new KTM 1290 adventure so today i took it for a test ride and heres the verdict.

Turned at Crescent KTM Verwood about 1140 and met with Guy again, who handed me the keys to the new bike, had about 100 miles on the clock but ready to g with half a tank of fuel, told me to have a good ride out and make sure i was happy with it.

Well what can i say, its devine, its super smooth, the gear box just does as its told its pulls and pulls, scary rapid, 3 - 4 gear are crazy and the front lifts with no issue at all, i didn't intend to make it lift but it does so if thats your thing you will be happy.

The brakes are awesome with loads of feel loads of stopping power when needed loaded with confidence.

The finish of the bike seems really good well painted with solid fixtures ect.

So in fairness i took the BMW GSA yesterday to just make sure its what i want and have weighed up the pros and cons of both.

Ride - about the same i think the KTM turns in a bit better but neither dive under breaking both very smooth, the KTM set in sport mode on the suspension is very hard and stiffens right up but in comfort mode suited me best.

Power settings - On both bikes the computers work well to dial down the power to suit when in rain mode, i could not really tell any difference between street and sport but I'm no race rider so left it in sport.

Speed - its clear that the KTM is much quicker the traction control less intrusive, the BMW did have some kind of road/off road tyre which may not offer as much grip letting the diff slip more, maybe!

Finish - only time will tell really but the BMW i rode yesterday did have bits of rust on various bits, and looking at the 1190 demo it still looked good.

Shaft or Chain - Shaft drive wins hands down, but only for convenience, reliability and servicing is a pain with a drive shaft but no mess and better for touring, but the cost of repair is massive and is a worry. Chain and sprocket is about £200 fitted so not to bad. So if touring you just take a can of lube with you.

Looks - Subjective, but i like both i really do, I like the BMW headlight but i like the KTM turn lights, maybe the BMW wins this one, just!

Extras, i love the satnav set up on the BMW and the KTM lacks this but a Garmin 590lm should work fine, a pair of heated seats on the KTM will be nice more for Mrs dsb, i think the BMW cruise is a bit easier to use and neater, but the KTM works just as well.

I could go on and on, but in reality its what takes your fancy but KTM could have BMW by the balls with this bike, test ride it see what you think, i think lots of you will be parting with some cash.

Price not much init really, but KTM did a good deal on boxes ect where BMW would not really budge on price.

I did, he would not do anything on the price which is no surprise, but did a good price on panniers and an akrapovic exhaust. Wait till Monday for finance to clear but cant see it being an issue.

Lucky sod !!!

oh and servicing every 9000 miles and not 6000 like BMW, which will mean once a year now for me.

Called in to the local KTM dealer today . He said his demo bike had been out 3 times and he has taken 2 deposits for June delivery , but he said they are going to be extremely hard to get hold of for uk dealers.

I rode the 1290 Super Adventure back to back with the 1050 Adventure and preferred the smaller, less powerful bike

Then again, the best bike I rode all day was the one I arrived and went home on and had sticky out cylinders

Didn't even ask for him to throw in 600 mile service, just gave it me. The grips were great set on medium. Nice n fat which dealer?

Phatcat, The had one bike in stock which is now mine.

If you can ignore Toby Moody, this is quite a good vid explaining all the modes etc :

He's like one of those dogs with the wobbly heads in the back of your car...Most distressing to watch :)

Went to see one today and the 1190.....Look like a GS to me, nothing special and like the BMW I could not see the value in the bike.

Gonna go back and have a ride though, if anybody actually speaks to me that is.....I will go on a different bike, see if that makes a difference:D
Less lipstick as well.

That video was about as irritating as it could possibly get - the only redeeming thing was that he pronounced Akrapovic correctly.

Well picked her up today and really happy, felt really looked after by Guy at Crescent, still gave the top brand treatment.
There is one issue, the pannier sits to close to the pillion seat heat switch, so the pannier will not fit, no big deal, they are looking into it and will get back to me, I'm meant to be touring next Friday and said either way I will have a set of panniers on. First service on Friday as well.

The acroprovic sounds awesome so much better then standard.

Hopefully have a demo ride this week. Really looking forward to it and if the weekly comic is anything to go by, the King is dead, long live the new King.......:green gri

I've been out for a couple of hours on the 1290SA this afternoon.
I've been looking forward to riding one ever since I saw the first pictures and was expecting this bike to be utterly amazing.
So I popped along to my local dealer and was rather looking forward to getting out on the beast.

The riding position was good, with seat and screen both on the highest settings.Off I went on a mixture of roads-a bit of M way,A roads and twisties over the South Downs.
My god,the thing is B A L L I S T I C !! It feels so much faster than the 1190,though I'm sure it's only because it is some time since I rode one.I was surprised by the throaty sound of the motor-I think it's more of an induction roar than anything the end can is doing. The gearbox seemed very slick and smooth even though the bike had only 200 miles on the clock.
I tried the different damping modes but was surprised that even in Comfort the bike still seemed much firmer than my 950.To be honest I couldnt sense much difference between any of the three sport, street or comfort modes !!
The screen seemed pretty good for me with it on the high setting. But there was still a bit of buffeting at higher speeds.
The menus were fairly simple to navigate but I think there must be a more logical way that KTM could do this.
I know the indicator switch is a micro switch but I really don't like the lack of movement when in use.
Cruise control was a bit clunky to be honest and at M way speeds the bike didn't seem as planted as a GSA.

My overall impression, summed up in one word was UNDERWHELMED.

I tried the 1190 when it was launched and absolutely loved it,apart from the styling-I would get the 1190R in preference.

I like the look of the 1290 BUT there is something missing and I can't quite place it.The bike didn't feel that special and it bloody well should for a £16k bike.
I must actually agree with Nutty, the switch gear does look a bit cheap and the integration is a bit of a mess.
The motor is amazing, but it doesn't feel like a 1290-I can't really say why but I think it's that the induction noise drowns out any v twin character and the way it revs almost like a 2 stroke some how detracts from it feeling quick-until you look at the speedo !!!

If I was going to spend £16k on a bike , I think I would actually prefer to get a toilet GSA-even though the styling is a bit of a pig,at least it looks like an expensive bike in an imposing kind of way and the way a GSA handles at low speed is somehow a nicer experience than that of the 1290.

So I was very surprised to leave the dealer and get back on my 950SE and not feel like it was a backward step.

Perhaps my days of buying new bikes are over-I can foresee a visit to Hilltop to get my K1200S fettled, and then for less than 2/3 the cost of a new 1290 (without luggage !!!) I have 2 bikes giving the best of both worlds.
