1290 Super Adventure v 1200 GSA test ride

No it's just a question as new boots are required. I know it will only ever be a road only bike and I thought I'd try and get a few opinions for him on road biased tyres. It's a heavy bike so perhaps that's going to limit his choice. Whilst I might get some ideas from others experience I was wondering if perhaps Road Attacks would be ok for example?
Don't think the 1290 has been around long enough for there to much experience with different tyres. There is a monster thread over on adventure rider for the 1190 and tyres. Make sure you get the standard thread and not the R thread. It isn't the same bike but maybe close enough to be of use.

Other than tk 80s the TV's are the only approved tyres by KTM. Not that that matters.

Thanks v much. I'll go and read that thread. I do think though that I heard someone at the Dealers saying some GS/ GSA owners were putting road attacks on so I think that may be a worthwhile consideration. I'm happy to do this research for my friend as I will be faced with the same decision on my LCGS soon. I find the PR4's a bit noisy, but the I did the Anakee threes. I pretty sure good thing said about Road Attacks . L will have to look back over some posts on UKGSER too. Thanks again.

Never used road attacks on my GSA but I had them on my TDM and thought they were brilliant. I do have trail attacks on my GSA and don't like them very much but they felt good the 2 hours I was out testing the 1290. I guess the moral is that different tyres suit different bikes. What works on the 1290 might not work on your GS.

Oh I should add that over on adventure rider an inmate did a track day on his 1290 SA and the stock TA2's, they are melted right off the edge and he had zero complaints about them. Track is different to road but I don't see any complaints about the stock tyres until they go proper off road. Surprised me given my experience with them on my GSA!

Don't know as mine isn't here until next week, maybe, if it makes it out of France. Guys from the states are reporting well into the 300s when touring. One guy even posted a pic showing 52 US mpg. They won't be getting that if they use all the power though.

Not a huge fan of the looks either but to me it's better looking than the new GS GSA are.

Sounds similar to the GSA then - I get 275 from a tank commuting. I agree, they are better looking than the new GS/GSA!:D

I have been a proud owner of a GS TC for a short time, but I always really wished I had bought a GSA LC . I went to Jeffries and had one out on demo, I loved it and looked at finance options with a view to chewing it over before biting the bullet.
I gave it deep thought and came to the conclusion that I would be daft not to at least try the KTM 1290.
I arranged a test ride and all I can say is WOW !! What a fantastic bike.
Don't get me wrong there are pros and cons to both bikes, but for me the KTM just left me grinning from ear to ear.
Biking for me is all about fun, and I had a total hoot on the 1290 and didn't really want to take it back, needless to say it looks like a deal has been done on their ex demo bike with just 500 miles on it.
I have never experienced KTM ownership before so just hoping I've made the right decision..... I've heard good and horror stories about reliability/ dealer back up, so time will tell.

Pretty much what happened with me. I was bored with the GSA and the new one didn't do it for me. Now have an SA sitting in the garage.

Agreed BMW reliability isn't exactly top notch and there seems be be some duff dealers as well.

I went for a test ride on the 1290 Adv last week and like others....it blew me away. Oh that motor....many will say you don't need 160bhp....and they are right....but you will want it! Intoxicating.

I was really impressed with the suspension....it felt really firm around town and initial Impressions were not good. However, once over 30 mph....I dunno....it just seemed to sort everything out and give a very smooth ride....unlike my GSA LC which was very fidgety....not just firm but poorly sorted by comparison. The screen worked well, great ergonomics and was a breeze with a pillion.

BUT I will not buy one.....I was sweating my bollocks off by the end of the ride....the heat through the seat on anything other than a cold day for me is just a no go....the thought of riding that through the recent heatwave on a tour in Europe has put me right off....which is a real shame because it would have been a real contender and a better bike than the GSA IMO.

So, staying with the GSA TC for now....and boy does it feel slow!

Poor excuse.....easily sorted. ;)
In all honestly, I never noticed the heat from the 1290 that my 1190 gave off before I sorted that with the Wings seat coolers. KTM also have their own take on those too at a much more reasonable price.

I just popped over from Holland
To Scotland for a weeks trip two up fully loaded,
With all the bike clothing on didn't notice the heat from the bike at all.
Yesterday arrived home,
and rode in to the city for an hour in jeans.
I could feel some engine heat but less than my 1200gs lc that I traded in.

Greetings Emile

Would you recommend the 1190 davy ?

Well, he's sold it for a bike he's never seen or ridden, or know the price of. And would rather ride around on an old nail until next year, so draw your own conclusion.:D

He's right you know Streaky :thumb2

Davy saw the light before it was too late. The 1190's really are shit bikes and few people seem to like them. You're much better off with one of those WC's that everybody's got or, if you want to go a bit left field, one of those SX1000's that everybody is starting to get :)

Nah, that's a load of bollocks. The ones crying about the vibes are the ones with the death grip on the bars as they're so scared. No vibes with a relaxed grip.;)

Yep, don't know if I've committed suicide by hype yet or not. If it fails to live up to expectations, an 1190R may well be the next big thing.....:rob
