Just noticed a number of small cracks in the screen on my 12GSA (1800 miles on the clock). The cracks radiate out from the hole in the screen for the upper left mounting bolt.

Anyone else seen this on theirs:confused:

Mine has the same problem. Another issue is thats it bloody difficult to adjust the screen? It will drop down easy enough but its a bugger to lift back up.:nenau

GSA Screen

Just checked mine, small cracks on both top mounting holes. Only 850 miles on the clock - will keep a close eye on these to see if they grow.

Cheers, Rick.

These things are very tough - my guess is those small cracks are cosmetic only. I was upside down on mine and still didn't break the screen - in fact I'm still using it after I straightened all the hardware.

Rick, do you have a GPS fitted to the top mounting frame?

I have and I wonder if that is putting extra stress on the mountings....

Stuart,

Do you have the dome lock nuts on the inner end of the lock screws? With them on, you can't unscrew them far enough. Take 'em off and adjusting the screen is easy! Only applies to the 12GSA.

Cheers paul, that makes sense. I will take a look tomorrow and have a fettle.

Thanks Stuart:clap

Being rather over-familiar with GS screens, BMW built them with a strange material which is quite brittle and susceptible to cracking around any holes.

Every single R150GS Adv screen I fitted Tobinators to had small hairline cracks around the mounting holes. The R1200GS screen is no doubt made of the same stuff.

I wouldn't worry about it.

If you apply loctite to the threads and then hand tighten the silver dome nuts, that seems to give adequate movement to adjust the screen. Also try standing in front of the bike and holding the support bar each side and pulling outwards slightly when adjusting helps.

I've just had my screen (GS, not GSA) replaced under warranty because it had developed a small crack radiating out from the mounting hole. In the four weeks since I first noticed it, it was beginning to lengthen slightly, and presumably would have kept going until it struck an edge somewhere.

The mechanic guy reckoned it was because the mounting had been over-tightened...
