i've been riding round with the panniers on lately & found them terribly useful, but very restricting in traffic 'cos of the width. i can "buttonhole" the bars through gaps to some extent, but the boxes demand extra care.

anyhow, lately i've been considering a change from my lifelong hatred* of top boxes to consider actually buying the matching bmw item. so c'mon, show me some pics of your GSAs with top box to either show me the folly of my ways or forever banish the notion.

OEM only. givi etc. will not be considered due to flagrant disregard of item 3 below. are they really italian?

*weight in the wrong place, pizza delivery connotations, the most basic aesthetic considerations etc.

Never leave home without it,more often than not there's nothing inside it save for a spare neck buff and gloves, there's some tyre repair stuff and spare Co2 cylinders ,there is a pack of chemical metal in there too, my camera goes in there too-if i take it with me :D
With that little lot in there I can still put the GPS inside the Tour-X and put those inside too,it's totally useless
Oh! when you are amongst a group of tossers talking shite it provides a convenient place for folks to put down their pint/coffee/elbow etc.

Have you looked at tail packs? Touratech do one that sits over the rear seat and rack, i find it really useful and its very discreet. You wont get as much in it as a top box and it's no good if you allways have a pillion - but i like it!

top box is a bit more secure for leaving stuff as 2 wheel humvee suggests, making it more suitable for my needs.

it even looks tolerable in his picture and floyd's too. if i do get one it will be the bmw one to match the panniers.

thanks for the help all :thumb

Don't like them much myself but they are so convenient as Humvee says. The OE one doesn't look that bad either.

And you know what I'm like with panniers!

Sorry Cookie can't post you any pics as I dont have mine back yet, but I've been running with mine on most of the time - mostly because there isnt anywhere to secure it safely in the garage.

IMO, I think it looks good and its a lot bigger than you would expect, I've been able to secure an old Aria and a Tour X 2 (separately of course) in mine quiet comfortabley with space of gloves etc.

I used to have a ZZR1100 with a full Givi set, the topbox on that looked huge, but I've got to be honest the OEM BMW one looks fairly small on the bike.

Happy to send you some pics of mine if/when I ever get it back.

Come on fellas, these are GS's we're talking about, a pretty ugly bike anyway, so sticking any kind of topbox on won't hamper it's looks now will it!

I'd say go for whatever box suits your needs, I've a choice of 36 or 46 litre GIVI, so if I need huge and the ability to take two full face helmets then I go for the big un, otherwise I use the smaller one.

Would that be what gives me a slight weeve at 140??? :bounce1

Strewth, how fast does your GSA go???????? I've just bought one and I'm still running it in but I only expected about 125mph tops! :o

I've got the BMW topbox (and paniers) on my GSA and on the whole they are great. The only problem with the top box is the lid, it hinges at the back (as you are facing it from behind) rather than at the side. This means that whenever you open it, it dumps whatever crud has accumulated on top of it onto your seat (or whatever you have stowed on your seat)! Also, the lid is not fully removable like the panier lids.

Other than that, top bit of kit I'd say.

Derek.

How much are they ? Do you need fixing kit?

About £350 including all the bits required to fit to an Adventure, IIRC. The box is a couple of ton, and then you need a fitting kit. If you're fitting one to a 1200GS, you'll need a Adv rack (c. £130), and won't be able to use Vario panniers.

£384 inc. fixing kit

decided not to bother. saw one in the flesh last week, and although it looks very handy, i have decided i am still too cool to have a top box :D
