my bike is coming up for its 12k service 18 months old. looking at the maintenance schedule on http://www.r1200gs.info/R1200GS-Maintenance-Schedules.pdf
apart from the oil & filter change , air filter element, valve clearances all the rest are just checks.
both jefferies and robson's have quoted £250 i find this a little bit over the top.
most of the checks i do as a matter of weekly service.
i dont quite understand what the abs bleed test is but that with the stamp in the handbook looks like 200 quid to me

any thoughts ?

no problem with that just the warranty

....and you don`t want a 1200GS without one of THEM.............. :D :D

If you keep the receipts for oil and filters etc and do a ticklist then 'i think' you can still claim warranty.

Check the Euro laws regarding warranties and servicing

Apart from the motronic fault diagnosis, most (if not all of the servicing) is fairly easy by other bike standards.

In terms of the warranty, hasnt UK law changed recently (or is about to change)? I believe that now (or soon), there will be not 'tie in' with a dealer to keep your warranty valid. I'm not sure about servicing yourself, but I'm pretty sure that your warranty is valid if you have a service at a non BM dealer etc.

In a couple of weeks, I'll have done 24000, so as per my 18000, I'll do it myself, but I'll get a dealer to read the motronic to make sure there are no issues there.

Probably doesn't help, but there you go!

Quotes from BMW Warranty booklet:

"Your dealer warranty will not be affected should you decide to have servicing carried out by a non-BMW authorised workshop"

"Proof of adeqaute servicing may be required...... details of work carried out, the specification of lubricants and parts used, the type of service carried out and the vehicle's mileage"

".....Dealer reserves the right to reject the claim where it is felt that the cause of the defect is due to the use of a non-genuine BMW part or inadequate servicing or repair by the non-approved dealer"

So no reason why you shouldn't do your own servicing as long as you keep records (and do it properly :D )

£250 seems a little over the top but not massively. Not compared to what GSers in the south seem to be paying.

If you add up the cost of the consumables needed:
Oil - £15
Filter - £10
Air Filter - £10

That's £35 it will cost you to do those parts yourself, so can you negotiate a discount of more that £35 with the dealer for a partial service? Make sure you check things like the brake pads beforehand too, and if they are low, either replace them yourself or instruct the dealer not to, so you don't get ripped off for BMW pads. As has been pointed out, most of the service items are just checks, so there's limited scope for saving money if you want the stamp in your service record.

On the other hand, once the warranty has expired, it'll be easy enough to do all the work yourself, except maybe brake fluid changes if you have servos/ABS. Even that's not impossible.
