I've got a bit of a problem on one of my bikes, can you help?
The bike, it appears, is using a 12v AC system, there is no battery, just an alternator/generator.
I have mounted a 2610 on the machine, but it requires a 12v DC supply.
Do you know of any converters available?

I'm no electrical expert, but I'm sure someone on here will know the solution to this issue.

Thanks in advance.

a bridge rectifier with a smoothing capacitor :nenau

Sounds good Tuned, and i was just looking through the Maplin site.
I have an idea but being mechanical and not electrical, I was looking for some reassurance.
I may give Tarka a PM, he's electrical......

Hi Timpo, may be worth checking the feeds.
On my XR 400, again no battery, we wired in a socket for gps plus heated grips to the uprated 200w generator and the light feed ( I think ) is dc.
My mate an auto electrician and he did it for me so I'm no expert but hope this helps

The only thing I know about it is, that you could end up with poor starting issues when you start messing about drawing power to charge a battery.(to give you a stable 12v dc.

Some energy transfer systems (no battery, reliant on alternator output to give enough sparks to start the engine) need the alternator timed so the fluctuations in poweroutput at very low speeds (starting) result in the peaks are timed to the requirement for a spark.

When a battery is added these 'peaks' can be dulled th the extent of preventing starting.

This info comes from many years ago when I ran various ET systems on my trials bikes. So may not apply nowadays.

Here's a start.....

I would also incorporate a regulator circuit just in case. The alternator output is marginal but I would think it could well handle the extra load of a GPS....:thumb2

easily, but,,,without a battery, check it wont go over 12v when u rev it up, and it MAY be under 12v when ticking over???a battery is the most stable, does a garmin actually NEED 12v, ?have u checked?can it put up with voltage fluctuation?
