I took my 1300GS in to Bowker in Preston for 6k mile service. The bike was less than 6 months old. I was told it had an engine problem, scouring in the barrel and I needed a new engine. I asked for a new replacement bike but they would not do that. I refused the new engine and traded the bike in for a new R12 G/S.
I interested if anyone else has had this engine problem and need a new engine on their 1300GS?
I met a fellow rider yesterday who said he’d had the same issue with his 1300GS and needed a new engine. This was again diagnosed and carried out by Bowker in Preston.

They should have offered you the full value adjusted by a fair use charge (miles x p).

Any idea what had caused the barrel scoring/ issue? Had you noticed an issue with the bike during the 6000 miles you’d ridden?

Interestingly I spoke with a BM mechanic over last summer and he mentioned they were looking at scoping engines!! :thumby:

I’d not noticed anything except using some oil. More than expected. They said they investigated because it was noisy. I wear ear plugs so hadn’t noticed that.

I had a new engine due to excessive oil consumption. The barrels were scored, one worse than the other. The bike was smoking on the overrun. BMW had no figure for what was an acceptable level of consumption "as it is a new model", but ultimately agreed it was excessive. (At 24,000 miles)! New engine is fine.

Seems I’m not the only one! Can you say who the dealership that diagnosed and replaced the engine please?

The good news is that BMW will act when its product is faulty. I've had the engine and box replaced on a 1250 GS. Honda refused on a Fireblade that used one litre of oil every 100 miles.....they had a batch of bikes with faulty rings.... BMW warranty has value.

please post the VIN of the affected bike - so we can look at production dates ?

Probably best not to post a vin on a public forum....
anyone nasty already has the info

as he no longer has the bike there is no risk to that owner - and anyway anyone can take a picture of your VIN at any time when parked in a public place

what we need to do is identify the production run where they made a few special ones where the chocolate coat cyl plating was updated to the about to be new std

like the thousands of well loved mint low mile pre 2014 K1600s with chocolate pistons still dropping ?

or the Mini sunroof motor (at half price) that also does the K1600 starter motor driven reverse gear that can't reach 12,000 miles - that BMW don't cover even though legally they have too ?

It's much easier to scrape public forums and the internet for VIN numbers than going around randomly photographing people bikes.

Think it would be better to pm this info?

Ive heard of 2 others , one went for a 1200 service at John Clark in Dundee ,and they told him it needed an engine, dealers told to look at bores during service.

They are always nice to me.

I wouldn’t “pm” him anything.
The bloke’s unhinged on this site. An unguided missile.
The next thing you’ll see is your VIN number doing the rounds on the internet. Fekk that for soldiers.

He professes to know everything about BWM yet, here he is, posting and asking for more information.

I bet he works for Voge; or, if he doesn’t he wished he did. 👍

I bought a '73 last August that had done 1100 miles from new but it had a brand new engine fitted before I bought it. #I had to do the running in.

this post reminds me of dealers and owners discussing how each model year of the R1300 engines sounds different to one another

that's why knowing the build date of this failed engine would be so helpful....

sales guys would mention build date of each bike as they rode round to the workshop just from the racket each bike made

I don't have a sunroof on my GS so all good

So what would YOU actually do with this information?
And how would this information be used to benefit the OP?
