Looking on the BMW Motorrad site there is currently 156 1200gs TE's for sale!! They all appear to be "used" with miles on the clock which has left me asking the question "Why so many for sale"?
Is there a problem with them causing owners to sell them? I know a few will be dealers selling last years demo bikes but 156 seems very unusual?

Probably RT recall courtesy bikes.

could be that or bikes from their employees - I know this happened in Germany a lot

Across how many dealerships?
If you went into a dealer and saw 3 second hand GS TEs for sale you would say is that all you've got.
AS iandavid says a lot of RT loaners came back in, I know, I bought one. That dealer had 4 back in one week.

Is it unusual? I wouldn't really know for sure but I would guess that some further information might help such as:
How many dealers are there in the UK?
As you say, they will all have demo bikes and these often get sold after a few months and can be a very good buy. A gentleman of this Parish has one he picked up in June 2013 and he's now done nearly 40,000 trouble free miles on it (including to Morocco).
Also how many is this as a percentage of all the TE's sold?
I understand the GS TE was by far the biggest selling BMW over the last couple of years, in fact I seem to remember somebody quoting it accounted for 60% of the total of all BMW motorcycle sales! So it may just be a normal turnover percentage of a very successful model!
I guess there may also be folk who like to part ex for the latest model as well as those who bought on finance options - maybe that makes a contribution too?

Perhaps there will be a number of wise folk on here who will be able to enlighten us further ;)

Consider the time of year. Come the sunshine and it will be a different story..!!

Also every dealer had to register several new gs bikes when bm had the Rt issue. Once the shock issue got sorted the gs bikes were returned to the dealers and put up for sale with very low mileage.

Maybe they are some of the machines used on the GS trophy. 64+ bikes. You read about in MSL or the awful BMW website.

Currently we've got nearly 200 of all the current Motorrad model range gathered in a nearby hotel in Garrucha, s.e. Spain, for BMW's annual new-models Spanish-sunshine German bikers' jolly. But they won't let me buy one...and I'd love one of the new basic -R models that flash past my local bar in a streaming convoy along the beach road every morning for the past week or so. Boo-hoo.

I doubt it very much seeing as the event was in Canada. The UK qualifiers only used 2 x 1200GSs IIRC and both of those took a proper battering - you certainly wouldn't want to purchase one of them:eek::rolleyes::blast

id agree with post 2 and say these were all pre registered to be available for the RT riders….its got to have a knock on effect on the value of secondhand models

BMW are experts at NOT flooding the market with new models, they only release so many at a time which keeps prices up, For example the new S1000xr, order one now and your looking at a Jan delivery 2016. so its a desirable machine and won't get discounted….but with 156 secondhand models out there now ,its got to have an effect

Also.................. How many GS LC's got traded in when the LC Adventure came out ?

Got to account for a few I'd of thought.

Agreed. How many people bought the GS because the GSA LC wasn't available but wanted a new bike, or had to change bikes as they had a PCP which needed settling? How many didn't like the buzzy engine in the early bikes and want a GS with the heavier crank?

156 - tip of the iceberg.

BMW have sold (or at the least registered) 13000 plus bikes in the past two years since the TE has been out, and the GS is one of the big sellers.

They'll sell quick enough, what with em being nearly new examples of the biggest selling adventure bike in the uk market.

I traded mine in, but that was over 4 months ago, and my "old" LC was sold the week after I traded it in.:thumb

perhaps some may be from the off road school in Wales? They must get through a few and the new season must be about to start? Just a thought

Exactly .... but don't worry if you already own a TE Spec GS as BMW have assured owners that the sudden glut of available bikes to the market will not have an adverse effect on values :augie

What a load of bollocks!!

I very much doubt you have tried to PX a GS at a dealer without being offered less than you would normally expect for it due to the glut of used GS' on market thanks to the RT recall.

When I PX' mine the dealers approached either didn't want it or offered vastly less than its true worth due to the number of similar bikes in stock at the time.
