17" front wheel with ABS ??

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Has anyone fitted a 17" front wheel onto a 1200GS with ABS??
I am in the process of doing this, but when I left my new rim at the dealers today, to have the discs & ABS ring fitted, he said that he had heard when this was done on a 1150 GS with ABS it caused the ABS warning light to be permanently on because the smaller wheel was going around faster, and this fooled the ABS into thinking there was a problem.

Has anyone had this problem.................

I wouldn`t have thought the wheel spinning faster would make any difference. Try it & see, you could always swop back?

Post pics too! :thumb

Simple question. How would the ABS know wheather you are going 100 MPH or 70 MPH? I'm not sure why this would be a problem.

if the abs compared the front and rear wheel speeds then the brakes
would fault every time you spin the rear tire on a dirt road, or lofted
the front wheel - not that anyone here would do such a thing.... ;)

17" front with 0 problems...

That's a sweet look there DVH :thumb Did you have any speedo problems? Or is the "drive" taken from elsewhere (shows obvious newbie-ness). :(
Is there a cast whell out there to match or near match my 04 cast wheels?
I'd love to SM mine.
Quicker steering?
Phil.

speedo reading comes from the rear drive. speedo, abs, and its magnetic
so you can see how much your drive is "shedding"....

whilst I'm no expert, I believe ABS will monitor the speed of the front and rear wheel all the time. One of the ways ABS knows the wheel is locking is the speed difference between the two wheels

Since you bring it up - Lifting the front wheel can create problems yes.

Once when I drove my 1150GS -00 on a raceway I noticed that If I lifted the front wheel for a relatively long distance during a short uphill straight the ABS system entirely blocked the front brake. The bike had to roll about 50 m with both wheels on the ground before it alowed me to use the front brake again. First time I was sh-t scared since it was a 180 degree hairpin coming up. What happened was that when the bike accelerated with the front wheel in the air the ABS detected a relative speed difference between the wheels - and assumed that the front wheel was slipping! Obviously a software error. It shold have recognized that I wasn't braking at all!

I could repeat the behaviour lap after lap so it was consistent.

On my current 1200GS I've not been able to confuse the ABS this way. They have obviously identified the problem and corrected the software. :bow

I thought the question was whether anyone experience
an abs fault running a 17" wheel on a 1200gs....
