1953 Annual motorcycling holiday round Europe

Now, that really is quite something..

Thanks for sharing!

Superb find and a lot of lessons to be learnt about not needing the very best and latest expensive bling, perhaps in their day they did have it but I'm convinced there's more fun to be had without it.

I have a feeling that perhaps some of those returning from the Picos may agree :)

Fantastic post. I'm 50 & my 16 year old was as equally interested in the pics as I was. It appeals to all ages. I love the peaked caps and head scarves :thumb

Looks good. I'm going to bookmark that and read it all tonight with a coffee. :thumb2

Eclectic, if I ever meet you I'd buy you a pint because that really was a brilliant read. If reading that doesn't feed the urge to go touring on a bike, you need to see a doctor.

Just a few thoughts:
  1. Have you thought of re-tracing the route in 2013 ie the 60th anniversary?
  2. Have you got the negatives? Some of those photos would make superb prints / posters? :eek

Hi Taff
Sorry I can't take any credit for the report. The link was sent to me by a friend who had bought a bike from "Paul" whose report it is.

Paul's email address is in the report.

The photos are just stunning. All the more so being black and white. Many of us have been in those areas in more recent times and it is fascinating to see how they were in 1953.

Liam

Thankyou

This is a fabulous article, I sat down with my wife tonight and read this post together, we both smiled reading about your fathers adventure, we salute him. Especially his ability to make tea in any conditions!:)

Excellent :clap From a time when pies were still rationed looking at the folk in the photos :D BarryG let me ride his Sunbeam S8 last week whilst at the Motopistons rally: it is a great little bike and he did about 500 miles on it including a few mountain roads. I was surprised how well it went. What a great adventure for the people crossing Europe in 1953 :beerjug:

Hi Paul
Just had to take a moment to say thank you for letting us share in these wonderful memories. Such evocative phoographs.
You are so priviledged to have these records of your father's life and travels.
Thanks again.
Geoff
