When I last removed the centre stand to paint it I noticed that the bushes were rather worn, and replacing them has been on my “to do” list for some time. I found that Motorworks do a kit with the bushes together with stainless springs and bolts so when I ordered a new battery I added this kit to the order.
To get the centre stand off I put the bike on the sidestand.
The first step is to remove the strings. They are quite stiff. I removed them using two screwdrivers and a cable tie.
The bolts have an allen head, but there is not enough clearance between the bolt and the sump to use a Allen key. My solution was to use a 6mm power tool bit and an adjustable spanner. Once unscrewed there is just enough clearance between the stand and the exhaust to remove the bushes without removing the exhaust.
Here is everything I removed and the tools I used.
Here are the contents of the Motorworks kit.
Once it was off I degreased then painted the centre stand. When I re-installed it I used the new bushes and the stainless nuts and bolts. The new stainless springs are very stiff and quite difficult to install. I used a cable-tie to hold the stand in the up position, and repeated the screwdriver and cable tie method, but I needed to use two as one was simply not strong enough.
Here is the result.
The cable wrap is an attempt to protect the paint but I rapidly removed it as it did not work. Ideas anyone?
