1992 R100GS Classic to PD conversion - what parts?

Hi all,

I'm looking for help with identifying and sourcing parts required to fit a PD fuel tank on a standard R100GS.
I have found a tank that I will need to paint.
A browse of the Motorworks website and a call to their sales line, had me thinking that the standard vs PD panels were the same, that is despite visual references saying otherwise - because the panels on the classic certainly did not look like they were the same as on the PD in photos.

Today, I took off my standard tank and slid the PD tank into place and there is no way, the standard fairing is going to work!



I did look all over eBay, UK, France, Germany, USA and Italy sites and could not find a single example of a PD specific R100GS fairing/panel.
I have found a supply of a pair of new panels, using the part numbers from the Motorworks site, but again Motorworks shows those parts as compatible with both the classic and PD bikes and I am concerned that I will be ordering panels that are the same as on my classic bike, not for the PD.

I'd be grateful for any advice.

Try realoem.com , parts are listed as different nos. but indicating ended so you can only hope for some old new stock

I’ve seen your pm but I thought I’d answer here so everyone can chip in. Way back when I had the second generation R100GS as per your red picture. I bought it new but really wanted the GSPD. At that time it wasn’t available in the UK as the plastic tank wasn’t legal. Originally the GSPD was a kit from the factory. Later available fully made up as a separate model.I ordered the parts from a UK dealer and you surmise correctly the side panels to the fairing are indeed a different shape that butt up to the much larger GSPD tank rather than overlapping the smaller one. There are rubber gaskets needed too. As far as I recall everything else will fit your GS frame.

The rubber bits and bobs appear to be available from Motorworks, I will contact the supplier that is indicating it has a pair of new OEM panels to see if they çan vouch for validity.

I may just have the rubber parts. I’ll have a look.

There might well be some extra mountings for the fuel tank. The fairing side panels are shorter, as you've already said. It might be possible to cut your panels down to the right size to fit the tank. But that will be very fiddely to get right. (edit, Just looking a little closer at a PD, the fairing panels are a different mold design, So might not be possible to cut down the originals, though taking a good look with the actual panels in hand might suggest otherwise).
The rest of the front end is the same including the metal nudge bar. Getting hold of the high front mudguard might be difficult to find a good one.
What's your plan with the oe GS tank? Might be interested in buying it if you happen to be going down that route.

I placed an order yesterday for a supposedly available pair of primed fairing panels (NOS) and tank/fairing join rubbers - the order was cancelled this afternoon as they were not actually in stock.
So, I guess I'll be searching eBay until I find a pair of these fairings, until such time the tank is going to be in storage!

I don't think the standard panels are shapable to fit the new PD tank and I don't want to be wrecking the current bodywork of the bike as I might well put it back to standard, should I ever sell it.
So, I will probably keep the standard tank with that in mind.
I've already fitted a third-party high mudguard which I rattle-can painted red - it doesn't look half bad IMO.

They look very similar, but not sure they're the right part - at least not based on the sketch from the parts catalogue.
