1995 R1100GS, which screen or bolt on extension ?

I must give a thumbs up to all those that have posted on my other requests for advice, even those that whinge on about the apparent lack of love towards their GS
I like all machines, all have their good points, many have a varying degree of not so good points.
The more I ride my GS, the more I like it.

I have had my GS for about 1000 miles now, I was initially very pleased with the way it handles.
I have ridden a few 1200's, and have never been taken by ride/feel/feedback of them when comparing to my KTM 990 Adventure, but I have always liked the idea of many aspects of the GS.
Shame the big KTM and the GS are often compared against each other…both very different machines, both with so many good points.

Then I read the sticky thread saying "don’t test ride the GS" http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169522 , had to laugh, agreed with so many of the comments, and wished I read that thread before test riding then dismissing the 1200 !



now to my current question…the screen

I ride all year round, mainly in Scotland, in the hills, which see a lot precipitation, of varying degrees of viscosity
I also ride over grass daily (or thru mud, at the moment), and ride thru the snow, so need to have good visibility to pick my line thru the ruts.

I have the standard screen fitted, which does not divert the precipitation/road grime etc away from my visor as much as I would like.

I have read that the bolt on Touratech extension can give a lot of turbulence

What are my options ?

What modifications have you done?
What was the effect?
Worthwhile?

That has to be an April fool. I've never seen one of those before and I can't honestly believe that anyone would be brave enough to fit one! The relentless pisstaking is too much to contemplate. That aside, I can't see it working very well and would be distracting as hell and noisy (and would probably get pinched almost immediately).

I have an MRA Vario screen fitted to my 1100 (bought from Jaws - a member on here with an accessories business) and it works well for me - certainly a big improvement on standard. The vario seems to get good reviews from those who use them but there are a lot of variables with screens (which helmet you use, your height / riding position, etc, etc).

I've got an MRA on my old 1100 and it's certainley loads better than the original. Not perfect but much better

That is the best accessory yet BIIIIG debate about a proposed windfarm up here and perhaps this is the simlest micro generation for bling hungry GSers

As for screens, it's a little subjective but i have had 3 11's and the best set up for my 6'6" is my present Aeroflow. As many don't like 'em and unless you buy 2nd hand they are big money many people go for the MRA vario which i rode on another GS.

Another good screen in the Secdem or Wunderlich which are the same thing. I throught this was the best for me before the Aeroflow and they are available at Motobins.

The standard screen is pretty poor but the best position for turbulence is as back towards you as it will go as the screen is too far away to be upright as the wind just goes around it and into you. The 1150 std screen is pretty crap too!

The only thing about rain on the visor is the better the screen at protecting you from the rain, the harder it is to clear it as its the wind that keeps it clear. The same goes for misting. With a really good screen you will ride with your visor up slightly more often

Have you never seen the old wind powered spinning visors, brilliant for keeping the rain off. I kid ye not, I think they still use them for Karting

I'm with Sgt Bilco on this one. Had an extended but standard type screen before and it kept the rain off but the buffeting was terrible.

Agree with the "much better" comments, but only tested up to 70 due to the icy roads.

but a drawback is the light reflecting up the inside of the screen from the headlight
