The initial service was done last Thursday and after getting home and it back in the garage I noticed the skid plate was crooked. The "tech" of course forgot to use his socket wrench after finger tightening the screws. The left two were still in but only by a couple threads. I bolted it back up with what I had but needless to say they are mailing two correct screws and a collar washer..... geesh.

My overall impression after 1,000 miles now is quite positive, possibly the best motorcycle I've owned (especially once I master the menu) but I'll delay making that judgement for a while yet.

Ergonomics; just about perfect seat-bars-pegs but the pegs seemed a bit small so I added larger ones from SW-Motech which are also almost 1" lower. I find the "comfort seat" actually pretty comfortable so it may be one of the few motorcycles I don't change to an aftermarket seat. The only other accessories I've added are a larger wind screen and deflectors (mine came with the mini shield and no deflectors), Trax metal panniers, and an Altrider luggage rack plate. I can't think of another thing I want for it.

Power delivery: excellent throttling, massive amount of torque everywhere, and smooth.

Suspension; active on this model and it might be the most impressive thing on this motorcycle. It just glides over small bumps and ripples, similar to the new Goldwings front setup but also absorbs the big hits very well. I love that it self adjusts the spring rate and preload. I would prefer not having the up and down function simply because of long term durability concern. I have it set only to lower with side stand deployment or engine off and of course raise upon start up. I appreciate that it does make it a little easier to swing my right leg over.

Handling; light yet stable, if anything a little light feeling in front often typical for bikes made for dirt roads. Going through a set of S curves is almost effortless and unaffected by small bumps mid corner. Riding down the highway with cruise set at 80 it's perfectly stable and with hands off the grips it doesn't pull either direction. Speaking of which, the speedo is more accurate than any European motorcycle I can recall. 80 indicated is between 77-78 on the GPS which is acceptable. Some have been as low as 74 or 75 which is simply too far off IMO.

Gearbox; shifts started somewhat notchy but now with some miles, and as I've adjusted, I find it very good. I seldom use the QS and only in the upper gears but when I do it works well. I like that it's geared a bit taller, especially in 5th and 6th, than the 1200 and 1250. I felt those bikes could use a taller 6th given how much torque they had.

Lighting; only rode once at night but the "pro headlight" plus auxiliary lights seem plenty good and seeing my friend Bob's 1300GS coming at me it's quite conspicuous during the day. Also the rear light setup of tail light, brake, and indicators are bright and display each function clearly. I know some feel they're inadequate and there's a thread or more of discussions, I'll just say when following another 1300 they were very conspicuous.

Looks; other than the "Jeep Renegade taillight" looking headlight it's growing on me. GS's have never been particularly attractive motorcycles, I view them more as interesting looking motorcycles that just work.

Glad you’re enjoying the bike, that’s 2 of us now :D

I love that it self adjusts the spring rate and preload.

For me this is a stand out feature, I’ve never had a bike that rides and handles this well two up

The variable spring rate is a revelation, it means the suspension is always optimal with or without passenger / luggage

I've not had the pleasure of riding a passenger yet, other than taking Barb on a few short rides a season I ride solo. but I can see how it should work well 2-up.

Wait while you have 24,000 miles on it....:) (y)

Looking forward to it, TD!

Just a stonkingy good all round machine.

I didn't realise that you could do this. I thought that when in auto it raised and lowered the bike dependant on speed and in high mode it staying raised all the time. I shall have to have a play with this. (y)

This is what I perceive it to be doing, it definitely raises as soon as the stand is up and lowers upon deploying the stand or shutting the engine off. IIRC there is another setting that keeps the bike lowered until after reaching some set speed like 15 mph upon which it raises. Then lowers when slowing to 30 mph. I didn't want the thing raising and lowering all the time while riding.

Strange ? I have not looked at anything ... but how can it vary a spring rate ? Preload - yes , damping in both directions - yes , but spring rate ?? How does that work - does anybody know?. (in my limited experience - spring rate is governed by material spec of wire , diameter of wire , no of coils over a given length , diameter of coils ... etc ? ... none of which I can think how you could change on the move !??)

I don't understand the details but in addition to the main springs F&R they each incorporate an additional spring that can work in conjunction with the main ones.

As someone who rides 2 up a lot and often with luggage I can confirm that it works brilliantly (y)

Sounds like you’ve set it to always high or use a mode such as Enduro which I believe sets it that way

OK , grand - so the spring rate (of main spring) is not actually changing - but the affect of the other bit of the system ... makes it (the whole system) "behave" ... as if it is . Very clever , all grand ... until it isn't (something breaks / does not function as it should). Thanks.

The suspension is impressive imo. I love the height reduction when slowing down, and unless one is focusing on it happening, it is not noticeable in any direction. The self levelling is brilliant for me, coming from an Africa twin where I would need to adjust the chain etc depending on the load, this system takes all the hassle out of it - just load up and go……want to explore from a base? No problem, just unload your luggage and go!

Glad you are enjoying it . I love mine . Taking it to Slovenia this year . Easier handling than my 1250 and I like the ASA . I love the looks of my GSA , as you say they have never been a looker and I’ve had all versions of the GS / GSA . Just a very good bike

A bit like a car, really?
Or my wife’s iron - she’s always telling me it’s frickin’ broken …. :D

In all honesty you could say that about any component on any bike. Itchy Boot's Tenere recently threw a rear shock and it doesn't get much more basic than that!

Yes that's it, it stays raised. Just lowers when stopped so the side stand will work. TBH I don't see any benefit of it being low once moving 15 or even 30mph? Have to think that in some scenarios the poor pump is getting a workout.

It’s nice when you come to junction or traffic lights, or any other time you stop, it’s more manageable when it drops down than if it stays high
